


{"id":124672,"date":"2026-09-16T11:09:29","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T05:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=124672"},"modified":"2026-09-16T11:09:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T05:39:29","slug":"dedicated-freight-corridors-backbone-of-indias-logistics-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/dedicated-freight-corridors-backbone-of-indias-logistics-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Dedicated Freight Corridors &#8211; Backbone of India\u2019s Logistics Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dedicated Freight Corridors Latest News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has effectively completed a 2,843-km dedicated freight rail backbone, comprising the 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) and the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About Dedicated Freight Corridors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are specialised railway routes designed primarily for the movement of freight.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike conventional railway networks, where passenger and freight trains share tracks, DFCs provide dedicated capacity for goods transportation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are designed to accommodate <\/span><b>longer, heavier and double-stack container trains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thereby increasing freight-carrying capacity and improving operational efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two operational corridors have complementary economic roles:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>EDFC:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Strengthens the mineral and industrial axis connecting northern India with eastern mineral-producing regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>WDFC:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Strengthens the manufacturing and export axis connecting northern industrial regions with western ports.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dadri-JNPT journey is expected to reduce travel time from approximately 66 hours to 58 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PM GatiShakti and Multimodal Connectivity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/pm-gati-shakti\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM GatiShakti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a GIS-based National Master Plan designed to improve multimodal connectivity to economic zones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It integrates satellite imagery, geospatial databases and infrastructure project information to improve coordination between different ministries and agencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, 58 Central Ministries\/Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories have been onboarded, with around 22,000 data layers integrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Network Planning Group has evaluated 352 infrastructure projects worth Rs. 16.1 lakh crore, of which 201 have been sanctioned, and 167 are under implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How DFCs Can Transform Logistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary benefit of DFCs is the creation of additional capacity on the conventional railway network by diverting freight traffic onto dedicated routes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average DFC traffic increased from 247 trains per day in 2023-24 to 443 trains per day in August 2026. The WDFC alone was carrying around 210 trains per day, equivalent to approximately 88% of its capacity even before full commissioning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can generate wider productivity gains through:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower inventory and working-capital requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved inventory-to-sales ratios<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced road congestion and fuel consumption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower logistics-related emissions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater reliability of exports<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expansion of manufacturers&#8217; market radius<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher factory utilisation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved port productivity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Integration with Ports and Industrial Corridors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The larger opportunity lies in integrating DFCs with Sagarmala, Bharatmala and multimodal logistics parks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sagarmala focuses on port-led development and includes 12 major ports and around 200 non-major ports. It has identified 294 rail and road connectivity projects, of which 84 have been completed, and 66 are under implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WDFC&#8217;s economic influence can therefore extend beyond JNPT by connecting with western ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav and Hazira, and eventually Vadhavan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This integration can transform the WDFC from a Delhi-Mumbai rail connection into a broader North-West India maritime trade corridor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Economic Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s logistics costs were estimated at <\/span><b>7.97% of GDP in 2023-24<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, equivalent to approximately <\/span><b>Rs. 24.01 lakh crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average freight costs were estimated at:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Rail:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rs. 1.96 per tonne-km<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Road:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rs. 11.03 per tonne-km<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Waterways:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rs. 1.80 per tonne-km<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, shifting suitable long-distance freight from roads to dedicated rail corridors can generate substantial transportation-cost savings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sectors Likely to Benefit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WDFC passes through important manufacturing regions of <\/span><b>Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating potential benefits for Automobiles and auto components, Engineering goods, Textiles and apparel, Chemicals &amp; Consumer goods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For automobile manufacturers and exporters along the NCR-Gujarat-Maharashtra axis, reliable rail connectivity can improve movement of vehicles, components and industrial inputs towards western ports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gujarat&#8217;s petrochemical and manufacturing clusters can also benefit from stronger <\/span><b>port-rail connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and high-capacity freight evacuation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Future Expansion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Railways have identified three additional corridors for detailed project report examination:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>East Coast Corridor:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kharagpur-Vijayawada<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>East-West Corridor:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Including Palghar-Bhusawal-Nagpur-Kharagpur-Dankuni and Rajkharsawan-Kalipahari-Andal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>North-South Corridor:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vijayawada-Nagpur-Itarsi<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2,052-km Dankuni-Surat DFC identified in Budget 2026-27 could create another east-west freight spine connecting India&#8217;s mineral and industrial heartland with Gujarat&#8217;s ports and manufacturing base.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success of DFCs will ultimately depend on last-mile connectivity, port evacuation, terminal capacity, warehousing, road interfaces and customs efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
