Born in May 1954 in Nakuri village of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, she became a major figure in Indian mountaineering. Her 1984 Everest ascent, later women led expeditions, social service and work for adventure training made Bachendri Pal an important name in Indian adventure sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bachendri Pal Biography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachendri Pal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was born into a rural working class family and developed an early interest in mountains, adventure, education and sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Birth and Family: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachendri Pal was born on 24 May 1954 in Nakuri village of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. Her father Kishan Singh Pal was a border trader and her mother was Hansa Devi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Education: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She completed her Master of Arts and Bachelor of Education from D.A.V. Post Graduate College, Dehradun. She later pursued formal mountaineering training at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Early Mountaineering: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her training, Bachendri Pal climbed Gangotri and Mount Rudragaria in 1982. Gangotri reached 23,419 ft and Mount Rudragaria reached 19,091 ft.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Professional Career: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She worked as an instructor with the National Adventure Foundation. She later became associated with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation and worked on adventure training and leadership programmes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Everest Selection: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1984, she was selected for India\u2019s fourth Mount Everest expedition. The expedition was named \u201cEverest \u201984\u201d and included six women and eleven men.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Bachendri Pal Mount Everest Ascent<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachendri Pal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reached <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mount-everest\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mount Everest<\/strong><\/a> during a difficult expedition in May 1984 and became the first Indian woman to achieve the summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Everest \u201984 Expedition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian team reached Kathmandu in March 1984 before moving towards Everest. The ascent began in May amid difficult mountain conditions and serious risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avalanche Incident: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An avalanche buried the team\u2019s camp and caused injuries. More than half of the members abandoned the expedition because of injuries or exhaustion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Summit Day: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 23 May 1984, Bachendri Pal continued towards the summit with Ang Dorje and other climbers. She reached Mount Everest at 1:07 p.m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Historic Achievement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to summit Mount Everest. She achieved the feat one day before her 30th birthday.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Bachendri Pal Contributions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachendri Pal continued adventure leadership after Everest through women led expeditions, river journeys, Himalayan crossings, training and social service.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indo-Nepalese Women\u2019s Everest Expedition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1993, she led the Indo-Nepalese Women\u2019s Mount Everest Expedition. Eighteen people reached the summit, including seven women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ganges Rafting Expedition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1994, she led the Great Indian Women\u2019s Rafting Voyage. Eighteen women travelled in three rafts from Haridwar to Calcutta, covering 2,155 km in 39 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trans Himalayan Expedition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997, she led eight women in the First Indian Women Trans Himalayan Expedition. The team covered more than 4,500 km in 225 days and crossed more than 40 high mountain passes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indira Col: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1997 expedition travelled from Arunachal Pradesh towards <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/siachen-glacier\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Siachen Glacier<\/strong><\/a> and reached Indira Col at an altitude of 20,100 ft, described as the northernmost tip of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flood Relief Work: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2013 North India <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/floods\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>floods<\/strong><\/a>, Bachendri Pal joined Premlata Agarwal and other mountaineers in relief and rescue operations in remote high altitude villages of Uttarkashi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Women Empowerment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work has focused on encouraging women and young people to participate in mountaineering, adventure activities, leadership programmes and outdoor training.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Autobiography: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her autobiography, Everest &#8211; My Journey to the Top, was published by National Book Trust, Delhi. Its ISBN is 9788123715278.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Awards Won by Bachendri Pal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachendri Pal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has received national awards and honours for mountaineering, adventure activities, leadership and her contribution to women\u2019s participation in adventure sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Padma Shri: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachendri Pal received the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/padma-awards-2026-winners-list\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Padma Shri<\/strong><\/a> in 1984. It is the fourth highest civilian award of the Republic of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Padma Bhushan: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachendri Pal received the Padma Bhushan in 2019.
