{"id":12495,"date":"2024-11-02T04:02:11","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T22:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12495"},"modified":"2025-04-01T19:35:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:05:29","slug":"what-is-lidar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-lidar\/","title":{"rendered":"What is LiDAR?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About LiDAR:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensing technology that uses light in the form of a <strong>pulsed laser to measure ranges<\/strong> (or variable distances) of a sensor, usually mounted aboard an aircraft, to Earth\u2019s surface.<\/li>\n<li>LiDAR data can be used to <strong>create high-resolution 3-D models<\/strong> of ground elevation with a vertical accuracy of upto 10 cm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Working<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>LiDAR instrumentation comprises a <strong>laser, a scanner, and a GPS receiver.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The rapidly firing laser travels to the ground where it hits vegetation, building, and various topographic features. This light is <strong>reflected or scattered, and recorded by the LiDAR sensor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The system calculates the light pulses\u2019 two-way travel time to arrive at the distance between the terrain and the sensor.<\/li>\n<li>It processes this information with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement System (IMS) data, to create an elevation map of Earth.<\/li>\n<li>LiDAR data is initially collected as <strong>a \u201cpoint cloud\u201d<\/strong> of all individual points reflected from everything on the surface, including structures and vegetation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The specific of how much light energy was returned to the sensor allows further identification of different features, such as vegetation, buildings, etc. For example, tree canopies, however dense they may be, allow some light to pass through and hit the ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Its data can be further refined to produce what scientists call a \u201cbare earth\u201d Digital Elevation Model, in which structures and vegetation are stripped away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applications<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is used to generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics.<\/li>\n<li>This is obviously very useful <strong>information for geographers<\/strong>, policy makers, conservationists, and engineers.<\/li>\n<li>It has also shown potential as a <strong>tool of archaeological discovery.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Archaeology?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture.
