Jaishankar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Vietnamese Foreign Minister <\/span><b>Le Hoai Trung <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-chaired the <\/span><b>19th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting on trade, economic, scientific and technological cooperation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two sides identified co-production of Indian defence items as a way forward for strengthening their ongoing defence and security cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defence and security cooperation is one of the central pillars of the <\/span><b>Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between India and Vietnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India regards Vietnam as a key partner in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/act-east-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Act East Policy<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Vision MAHASAGAR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Indo-Pacific approach.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two sides also discussed trade, investments, supply chains, connectivity, space, nuclear energy, capacity building and people-to-people ties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation Evolution\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India-Vietnam defence ties have gradually expanded from equipment support and capacity building towards broader strategic and defence-industrial cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>June 2022: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India handed over 12 high-speed guard boats to Vietnam, built by Larsen &amp; Toubro under a US$100 million Line of Credit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>July 2023: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India gifted the indigenously built missile corvette <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ins-kirpan\/\" target=\"_blank\">INS Kirpan<\/a><\/strong> to Vietnam, strengthening bilateral maritime and defence cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>July 2024: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two additional Lines of Credit worth US$120 million and US$180 million were signed between the Exim Bank of India and the Finance Ministry of Vietnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>May 2026: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Vietnamese General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam&#8217;s State Visit to India, the two countries elevated their relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, providing renewed impetus to bilateral ties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>September 2026:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India and Vietnam identified co-production of Indian defence items as a way forward for deepening defence and security cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation Significance\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The partnership has significance for India&#8217;s strategic interests, regional security and engagement with Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strategic balancing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stronger defence ties with Vietnam expand India&#8217;s strategic options amid China&#8217;s growing presence and assertive behaviour in the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indo-pacific-region\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indo-Pacific<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Act East Policy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vietnam is a key pillar of India&#8217;s Act East Policy, making defence cooperation an important component of India&#8217;s deeper engagement with Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Defence diplomacy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military dialogue, training and capacity building create sustained institutional linkages between the two countries&#8217;
