Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz first encountered the unusual cat in 2016. It had been kept by a local family after being found as a kitten. Genetic analysis of 38 cats, including eight museum specimens, showed five genetically distinct tiger cat species. Researchers retained the local name tilcayo used by communities in the Bolivian region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First Cat Species in Over a Century: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Cat Species 2026 is the first formally described living feline species in more than 100 years. The previous such description was the Pampas cat L. fasciatus in 1923.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Physical Size: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tilcayo measures about 18 inches or 46 centimetres in body length. It weighs about 3 pounds or 1.4 kilograms, making it smaller than an average domestic cat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appearance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its fur is light brown with large, irregular rosettes. The dark brown to black markings are mostly open or partly closed. It inhabits the Yungas cloud forest on Bolivia\u2019s eastern Andean slopes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet and Activity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small rodents found in fecal samples indicate that rodents may form part of its diet. Camera trap records suggest that the cat may be more active during nighttime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conservation Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of September 2026, Leopardus Tilcayo has not received a formal <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/iucn-red-list\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IUCN Red List<\/strong><\/a> assessment. The researchers have shared their findings with the IUCN for separate assessment of the five lineages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Threats to Habitat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yungas forest faces pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, human caused fires and mining.
