Pakistan and China described it as a mechanism for cooperation on <\/span><b>border management, joint border surveys, trade flows, cross-border movement and people-to-people connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India rejected the commission through a statement by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson <\/span><b>Randhir Jaiswal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. India reiterated that it has never recognised the <\/span><b>China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and maintains that Pakistan cannot enter into arrangements concerning territories that India considers to be under illegal occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Has India Objected to the Commission?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s objection is primarily linked to the <\/span><b>territorial status of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India maintains that Pakistan is in illegal occupation of parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore, according to India&#8217;s position, Pakistan cannot legally negotiate or establish boundary arrangements with another country involving these territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MEA has also maintained that the <\/span><b>1963 China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement is illegal and invalid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has never been recognised by India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s position can be understood through the following points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India considers the entire Union Territories of <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be integral parts of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India does not recognise Pakistan&#8217;s authority to enter into agreements concerning territories that India claims.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has consistently rejected the <\/span><b>1963 China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India objects to Chinese activities and infrastructure projects in areas of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India also opposes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/china-pakistan-economic-corridor\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because parts of it pass through territory claimed by India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roots of the present dispute go back to the <\/span><b>China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement signed on 2 March 1963<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the agreement, Pakistan and China reached an understanding on their boundary in areas controlled by Pakistan. The agreement involved the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shaksgam-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Shaksgam Valley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as the <\/span><b>Trans-Karakoram Tract<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India rejected the agreement because it considers the territory involved to be part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir and argues that Pakistan had no legal authority to transfer or negotiate over it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of India has consistently stated that Pakistan ceded approximately <\/span><b>5,180 sq km of Indian territory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Shaksgam Valley to China under the 1963 agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Shaksgam Valley<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Shaksgam Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the <\/span><b>Trans-Karakoram Tract<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a strategically important mountainous region located north of the Siachen Glacier.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/karakoram-range\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Karakoram region<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India claims the territory as part of <\/span><b>Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan controlled the area before transferring it to China through the 1963 agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The territory covers approximately <\/span><b>5,180 sq km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Government of India&#8217;s stated position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies close to the <\/span><b>Karakoram Pass and Siachen region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its location gives it strategic importance because of its proximity to <\/span><b>India, Pakistan and China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has repeatedly objected to Chinese infrastructure activities in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and India&#8217;s Concerns<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>CPEC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connects China&#8217;s <\/span><b>Xinjiang region with Pakistan&#8217;s Gwadar Port<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forms part of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/belt-and-road-initiative-bri\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>China&#8217;s <\/strong><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/belt-and-road-initiative-bri\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project includes infrastructure and connectivity projects involving roads, energy, transport and other facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has consistently objected to CPEC because parts of the corridor pass through <\/span><b>Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly areas that India claims as its territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the New China-Pakistan Boundary Joint Commission is also significant in the broader context of <\/span><b>CPEC and regional connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:
