She continues to be remembered, particularly in Assam, for her bravery and dedication to the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kanaklata Barua Death Anniversary 2026 History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kanaklata Barua Death Anniversary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is observed every year on <\/span><b>20 September<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to remember the young freedom fighter from Assam who sacrificed her life during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/quit-india-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Quit India Movement<\/b><\/a><b> in 1942<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kanaklata Barua was born on 22 December 1924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>Barangabari village<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in present-day <\/span><b>Sonitpur district of Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She belonged to a modest farming family and grew up during a period when the freedom movement was gaining strength across India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She became one of the <\/span><b>youngest martyrs of India\u2019s freedom struggle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after being shot by British police at the age of <\/span><b>17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while leading an unarmed procession to hoist the Indian national flag at the Gohpur police station.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her courage and sacrifice made her an important figure in Assam\u2019s history. She is remembered for her <\/span><b>patriotism, courage and commitment to India\u2019s freedom struggle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly for her role in the Quit India Movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kanaklata Barua Early Life and Role in India\u2019s Freedom Struggle<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kanaklata Barua belonged to a humble farming family<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and faced several difficulties during her childhood. She lost her mother, Korneshwari Barua, when she was only five years old and later lost her father, Krishna Kanta Barua, during her teenage years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After becoming an orphan, Kanaklata had to take responsibility for her younger siblings. Because of her difficult family circumstances, she could not continue her education and <\/span><b>left school after the third grade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanaklata grew up at a time when the <\/span><b>nationalist movement was spreading across Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The influence of Gandhian ideas and the activities of local freedom fighters encouraged her to take an active interest in the struggle against British rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She attended nationalist meetings and was inspired by the speeches of <\/span><b>Bishnu Prasad Rabha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the patriotic songs of <\/span><b>Jyoti Prasad Agarwala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These experiences strengthened her determination to participate in the freedom movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanaklata later joined the <\/span><b>Mrityu Bahini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a volunteer group associated with the Quit India Movement. Members of the group were prepared to face serious risks, including death, while participating in protests against British rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kanaklata Barua and the Quit India Movement<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Quit India Movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was launched in August 1942 after the All-India Congress Committee passed the <\/span><b>Quit India Resolution on 8 August 1942<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The movement demanded an immediate end to British rule in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Assam, freedom fighters organised peaceful protests and planned to hoist the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-flag-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Indian national flag<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at government offices and police stations. Kanaklata Barua became part of this movement and took part in one such procession at Gohpur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>20 September 1942<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kanaklata Barua led a procession of unarmed volunteers towards the <\/span><b>Gohpur police station<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hoist the Tricolour. She carried the national flag at the front of the procession.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The police warned the protesters to stop and return, but Kanaklata continued moving forward with the flag. The British police then <\/span><b>opened fire on the unarmed procession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Kanaklata was shot while carrying the Tricolour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kanaklata Barua died on the spot at the age of 17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another volunteer, <\/span><b>Mukund Kakoti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was also shot dead after taking the flag forward following her death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her sacrifice made her a lasting symbol of <\/span><b>youthful courage and patriotism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Assam.
