


{"id":12527,"date":"2023-06-26T08:16:09","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T02:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12527"},"modified":"2025-04-01T19:47:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:17:26","slug":"solar-mean-magnetic-field-smmf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/solar-mean-magnetic-field-smmf\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Mean Magnetic Field (SMMF)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Why in the news?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the Department of Science and Technology, scientists now are one step closer to identifying the <strong>source of the Solar Mean Magnetic Field (<\/strong>SMMF).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>About Solar Mean Magnetic Field:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>mean value of the line-of-sight<\/strong> (LOS) component of the solar vector magnetic field <strong>averaged over the visible hemisphere<\/strong> as well as its relationship with <strong>Interplanetary Magnetic Field<\/strong> (IMF).<\/li>\n<li>The sun contains <strong>the corona<\/strong> (the outer shell of the sun\u2019s atmosphere), the <strong>photosphere<\/strong> (the visible surface), and the <strong>chromosphere<\/strong> (near-transparent layer, just above the photosphere) with the <strong>magnetic field<\/strong> generated by electrical currents acting as a magnetic dynamo inside the sun.<\/li>\n<li>However, so far, the studies on the SMMF have <strong>mostly been confined to<\/strong> the magnetic field measurements <strong>at the photosphere.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>New Findings:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists in their quest to understand if and how the SMMF at chromospheric heights is related to the SMMF at photospheric heights have found a very good similarity between the two.<\/li>\n<li>The value of chromospheric SMMF is lower than the photospheric SMMF, thereby suggesting that <strong>the primordial magnetic field inside the sun could be a source of the SMMF.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They calculated and analysed the SMMF using magnetic field measurements at the chromosphere, in conjunction with that of photospheric measurements.<\/li>\n<li>These electrical currents are generated by the flow of hot, ionised gases in the sun\u2019s convection zone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Q) What is Solar flare?<\/strong><br \/>\nA solar flare is a sudden and intense eruption of energy from the Sun&#8217;s surface. It is a result of the release of a large amount of magnetic energy in a relatively short period of time.
