{"id":125320,"date":"2026-09-20T11:15:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T05:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=125320"},"modified":"2026-09-20T14:57:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T09:27:16","slug":"vallur-thermal-power-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vallur-thermal-power-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Vallur Thermal Power Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Vallur Thermal Power Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently admitted an application alleging that the Vallur Thermal Power Project is discharging hot effluent directly into the Kosasthalaiyar river and its backwaters in violation of environmental and CRZ clearances. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Vallur Thermal Power Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>coal-fired power project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the Tiruvallur District of <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a capacity of <\/span><b>1500 MW <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(3 units of 500 MW).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was developed by<\/span><b> NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited (NTECL).\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>NTECL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b>50:50 joint venture company<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formed between <\/span><b>NTPC and Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TNPGCL).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>commissioned to its full capacity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has been operating since <\/span><b>2015.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><b>70 percent of the power <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from this station is <\/span><b>supplied to Tamil Nadu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>rest to neighboring states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Pondicherry.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant consumes approximately 9 MMT of coal in a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>coal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is brought from the <\/span><b>Mahanadi Coal Fields, Central Coal Fields, Eastern Coal Fields,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> etc through <\/span><b>rail cum sea to <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kamarajar-port\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ennore Port<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there it is transported by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 4.2 km <\/span><b>long pipe conveyor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the plant.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pipe conveyor is one of the important features of this plant for dust-free operation over the Ennore Creek to ensure environmental protection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unique feature of this plant is that the <\/span><b>total plant water requirement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>met from sea water.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being close to the sea, this plant has a seawater desalination unit of 20 MLD capacity.
