{"id":125381,"date":"2026-09-21T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T06:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=125381"},"modified":"2026-09-21T12:00:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T06:30:56","slug":"project-cheetah-gandhi-sagar-emerges-as-a-2nd-cheetah-habitat-in-mp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-cheetah-gandhi-sagar-emerges-as-a-2nd-cheetah-habitat-in-mp\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Cheetah &#8211; Gandhi Sagar Emerges as a 2nd Cheetah Habitat in MP"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Project Cheetah Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Madhya Pradesh CM released <\/span><b>CCB-2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a three-year-old female cheetah brought from Botswana, into <\/span><b>Gandhi Sagar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wildlife Sanctuary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The relocation from Kuno National Park aims to establish Gandhi Sagar as a <\/span><b>viable second home<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for cheetahs in MP and strengthen the long-term conservation strategy under Project Cheetah.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move comes shortly after KGP12, an India-born female cheetah, gave birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park, marking an important milestone for the programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Project Cheetah<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Genesis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Discussions to bring the Cheetah back to India were initiated in <\/span><b>2009 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the Wildlife Trust of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Under the \u2018<\/span><b>Action Plan for Reintroduction of Cheetah in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, 50 cheetahs to be brought from African countries to various national parks over 5 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Most suitable site &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kuno-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kuno Palpur National Park<\/a> (KNP) in MP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst the surveyed sites of the central Indian states, KNP has been rated as the most suitable habitat with adequate prey base.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is assessed to be capable of supporting <\/span><b>21 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheetahs and is likely the <\/span><b>only wildlife site in the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where villages have been completely <\/span><b>relocated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from within the park.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kuno also provides the possibility of <\/span><b>harbouring four of India&#8217;s big cats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; tiger, lion, leopard and Cheetah, enabling them to coexist as they have in the past.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Other recommended sites: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary of MP; Shahgarh bulge and Mukundara Tiger Reserve of Rajasthan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>First reintroduction:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s cheetah reintroduction programme began in (September) <\/span><b>2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with African cheetahs being brought to India after the species had become extinct in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme is gradually moving beyond simply introducing individual animals towards creating multiple viable habitats and a sustainable, interconnected cheetah population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Rise in population:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth of four cubs at Kuno is particularly significant because their mother, KGP12, was herself born in India to a cheetah brought from South Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the cubs represent the <\/span><b>second generation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cheetahs born on Indian soil. The latest births reportedly took India\u2019s cheetah population to <\/span><b>56<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Why Gandhi Sagar Matters<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary (notified in <\/span><b>1974<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is spread across (an area of 368.62 sq km) the districts of Mandsaur and Neemuch in <\/span><b>western MP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, right on the border with Rajasthan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Chambal river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cuts the sanctuary into two almost equal halves and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/dams-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Gandhi Sagar dam<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lies within the area of the sanctuary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Ecosystem:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>savanna ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; comprising open grasslands interspersed with dry deciduous trees and shrubs, belongs to the sanctuary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the riverine valleys of the sanctuary are <\/span><b>evergreen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Cheetah reintroduction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It became India\u2019s <\/span><b>second <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheetah habitat after Kuno when two male cheetahs, Pawak and Prabhas, were relocated there in (April) <\/span><b>2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the arrival of CCB-2, Gandhi Sagar now has four cheetahs\u2014two males and two females.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The addition of another female is expected to improve the prospects of breeding and population establishment at the sanctuary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Significance of the Relocation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geographic diversification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Concentrating the population at a single site can increase vulnerability to disease, ecological disturbances and other risks. Gandhi Sagar provides an additional habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breeding potential<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A balanced male-female composition can improve the prospects of establishing a breeding population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Landscape-level conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Project Cheetah seeks to develop multiple suitable habitats rather than depend exclusively on Kuno.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Long-term population viability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The broader objective of Project Cheetah is not merely to increase the number of cheetahs but to establish ecologically viable, genetically diverse and sustainable populations across suitable landscapes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Boon to the ecosystem: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conserve the big cat, save not just the prey base (including certain threatened species), but also other endangered species of grasslands in the region.
