It is organised by Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease International (ADI) and highlights the need to recognise symptoms early, reduce stigma and strengthen care for older adults, especially those above 65.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>World Alzheimer&#8217;s Day 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>World Alzheimer&#8217;s Day 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falls on 21 September during World Alzheimer\u2019s Month. The observance promotes timely diagnosis, better support and greater public understanding of dementia and its impact on families.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>History: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Alzheimer&#8217;s Day was first observed on 21 September 1994 during the tenth anniversary of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease International, established in 1984 as an international federation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global Burden: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 57 million people were living with dementia worldwide in 2021, with nearly 10 million new cases each year. It mainly affects memory and cognitive functions and is the most common cause of dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common signs include memory loss, confusion, language problems, difficulty solving problems, behavioural changes and problems performing familiar daily activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Disease Progression: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early stage involves mild memory loss. Moderate disease can affect communication and routine activities. Advanced disease may cause severe memory impairment and dependence on caregivers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Risk Factors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing age is the strongest known risk factor. Family history, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, social isolation and untreated hearing loss can also increase dementia risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diagnosis and Treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis may involve medical history, cognitive assessment, neurological examination, laboratory tests, brain imaging and selected biomarker tests. There is no cure, but medicines and supportive care can manage symptoms and may slow progression in selected cases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Status of Alzheimer in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s growing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/elderly-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">elderly population<\/a><\/strong> makes Alzheimer\u2019s disease an increasing public health concern. Awareness gaps, stigma, limited specialised services and caregiver shortages can delay diagnosis and care.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Major Challenges: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural and underserved populations may face delayed diagnosis.
