{"id":12563,"date":"2023-06-27T02:33:14","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T21:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12563"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:01:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:31:38","slug":"whitefly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/whitefly\/","title":{"rendered":"Whitefly"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Whitefly:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These are <strong>winged insects that have soft bodies<\/strong> and are closely related to aphids.<\/li>\n<li>These are tiny, sap-sucking insects that may become abundant in vegetable and ornamental plantings, <strong>especially during warm weather<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>naturally distributed<\/strong> in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico (Martin, 2008) and subsequently, it has spread to 22 other countries in Central and South America.<\/li>\n<li>It mainly <strong>infests coconut palms and other broad-leaved hosts<\/strong> in its native range<\/li>\n<li>It is an <strong>invasive insect.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How the insect attacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The whitefly starts <strong>attacking the lower leaves<\/strong> of the coconut palm.<\/li>\n<li>It drains the sap from the underside of the leaf, producing a significant amount of honeydew which settles on the upper surface of the next lower leaf, leading to the growth of black, sooty mould.<\/li>\n<li>This is the secondary infection from the whitefly infestation.<\/li>\n<li>It has a serious <strong>impact on the production of coconut.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Not only does it <strong>reduce the size of the coconut, but<\/strong> it also decreases the coconut\u2019s water content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What are Aphids?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Aphids, also known as plant lice, are small sap-sucking insects that belong to the superfamily Aphidoidea.
