{"id":125681,"date":"2026-09-22T13:20:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T07:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=125681"},"modified":"2026-09-22T13:20:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T07:50:16","slug":"outer-space-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/outer-space-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Outer Space Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Outer Space Treaty Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US President Donald Trump recently posted &#8216;The Moon Is Ours&#8217; on Truth Social, but the 1967 Outer Space Treaty rules out any country owning lunar territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Outer Space Treaty<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an international agreement that <\/span><b>governs how nations act in space.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formally known as the <\/span><b>&#8220;Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; it is one of international space law\u2019s foundational documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born out of the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War and the competitive spirit of the space race, the treaty emerged as a response to the potential militarization of space.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall purpose of the Outer Space Treaty is to<\/span><b> keep space peaceful.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty was <\/span><b>adopted by the United Nations in 1967.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>first signatories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the<\/span><b> United States,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>United Kingdom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/dissolution-of-soviet-union\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Soviet Union<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>115 countries are parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the treaty, including all major spacefaring nations, <\/span><b>including India and China. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another 22 countries are signatories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes several important principles that guide space exploration and use to this day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the U.N. Office of Outer Space Affairs, the treaty\u2019s<\/span><b> key principles are:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That the <\/span><b>exploration and use of outer space <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shall be carried out <\/span><b>for the benefit and in the interests of all countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and shall be the province of all mankind;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>outer space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shall be <\/span><b>free for exploration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>use by all states;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>outer space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by means of use or occupation, or by any other means;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>states shall not place nuclear weapons <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or other <\/span><b>weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or station them in outer space in any other manner;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That the <\/span><b>Moon and other celestial bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shall be used <\/span><b>exclusively for peaceful purposes; prohibits <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their use for <\/span><b>testing weapons <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of any kind, <\/span><b>conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> installations, and fortifications;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>astronauts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shall be <\/span><b>regarded as the envoys of mankind;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That states shall be responsible for national space activities<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether carried out by governmental or non-governmental entities;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>states <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shall be<\/span><b> liable for damage caused by their space objects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><b>states shall avoid harmful contamination of space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and celestial bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Verification:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>States Parties agree to inform <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the UN Secretary-General as well as the public and the international scientific community, to the greatest extent feasible and practicable, of the <\/span><b>nature, conduct, locations, and results of activities covered in this treaty.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treaty sets forth that <\/span><b>all stations, installations, equipmen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, and space vehicles on the Moon and other celestial bodies shall be<\/span><b> open to representatives of other States Parties on a reciprocal basis.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/ht-explainers\/donald-trump-moon-is-ours-claim-outer-space-treaty-lunar-mining-rights-101789892807629.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>HT<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Outer Space Treaty is an international agreement that governs how nations act in space.
