


{"id":12571,"date":"2023-06-28T05:33:17","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T00:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12571"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:04:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:34:34","slug":"what-is-the-indus-waters-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-indus-waters-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Indus Waters Treaty?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Indus Waters Treaty:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>signed in September 1960 between India and Pakistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The treaty was <strong>brokered by the World Bank<\/strong>, which, too is a <strong>signatory to the treaty.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Provisions<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The treaty <strong>fixed and delimited the rights<\/strong> and obligations <strong>of both countries concerning the use of the waters of the Indus River <\/strong>system.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>gives control over the waters of the three &#8220;eastern rivers&#8217;<\/strong> &#8212; the Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej &#8212; <strong>to India,<\/strong> <strong>while control over the waters of the three &#8220;western rivers&#8217;<\/strong> &#8216; &#8212; the Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum &#8212; <strong>to Pakistan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Treaty <strong>allows India to use the western river waters for limited irrigation use <\/strong>and unlimited non-consumptive use for such applications as power generation, navigation, floating of property, fish culture, etc.<\/li>\n<li>It lays down <strong>detailed regulations for India in building projects over the western rivers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Treaty <strong>sets out a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange<\/strong> between the two countries regarding their use of the rivers, <strong>known as the Permanent Indus Commission,<\/strong> which <strong>has a Commissioner from each country<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0Which are the main tributaries of the Indus River?<\/h3>\n<p>Its principal left-bank tributaries include the Zanskar River, Suru River, Soan River, Jhelum River, Chenab River, Ravi River, Beas River, Satluj River, and Panjnad River.
