This date later became the basis for World Tourism Day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First Observance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Tourism Day was celebrated for the first time in 1980. The date also falls around the transition between peak tourism seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The observance was created to increase awareness of tourism\u2019s importance and its influence on social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ignatius Atigbi: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigerian national Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi proposed observing 27 September annually during a 1971 meeting of the International Union of Official Travel Organisations in Ankara, Turkey. His contribution was formally recognised in 2009.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Host Country System: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul in October 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided that a host country would be designated each year to partner in the celebration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geographical Rotation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Fifteenth Session in Beijing in October 2003, the Assembly established a geographical order for future celebrations. The sector supported 36.90 million direct and 47.72 million indirect employments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foreign Exchange: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As on June 2025, inbound tourism stood at 16.5 lakh visitors and outbound tourism at 84.4 lakh travellers. Tourism activity contributed \u20b951,532 crore in foreign exchange earnings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>International Tourism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2014 to 2025, India recorded 181.25 million international arrivals and 93.35 million foreign tourist arrivals. River cruise voyages on national waterways increased by 19.4% in 2024-25.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Tourism Sector in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is expanding tourism through destination development, connectivity, digital services, skills, heritage conservation and niche tourism while increasing community participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tourism Infrastructure: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swadesh Darshan has developed thematic circuits covering destinations linked with Buddhist, Coastal, Eco, Himalayan, North East, Ramayana, Rural, Spiritual and Tribal tourism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Challenge Based Development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CBDD scheme covers themes including Culture and Heritage, Spiritual and Eco Tourism, Amrit Dharohar and Vibrant Villages Programme. Projects focus on destinations with tourism potential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tribal Tourism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Development of Tribal Home Stays project provides support for village requirements, new rooms and renovation. The global MICE market is projected to exceed USD 1.4 trillion by 2030.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cruise Tourism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cruise Bharat Mission aims to strengthen cruise tourism through three phases from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2029. It also plans 51 new cruise circuits across 14 states and 3 Union Territories by 2027.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Digital Services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIDHI and NIDHI Plus support digital registration and business processes for tourism service providers. The Incredible India platform also uses an AI powered chatbot to provide traveller assistance and real time information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sustainable Tourism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel for LiFE encourages responsible tourism practices.
