{"id":12575,"date":"2023-06-28T12:11:45","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T06:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12575"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:06:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:36:03","slug":"what-is-national-sickle-cell-anaemia-elimination-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-national-sickle-cell-anaemia-elimination-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"What is National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>announced as part of the Union Budget 2023<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vision<\/strong>: <strong>Eliminate sickle cell disease<\/strong> (SCD) as a public health problem <strong>in India before 2047.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The overall aim is to <strong>enable access to affordable and quality health care to all SCD patient<\/strong>s, and to lower the prevalence through <strong>awareness,<\/strong> change of practices and <strong>screening interventions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The mission will entail awareness creation, <strong>universal screening of seven crore people in the 0-40 years age group in affected tribal areas and counselling<\/strong> through collaborative efforts of central ministries and state governments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Initially, the focus shall be on 17 states with higher prevalence of SCD<\/strong> viz., Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Uttarakhand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>What is Sickle Cell Anaemia?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>inherited blood disorder<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It<\/strong> <strong>affects hemoglobin,<\/strong> the molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>People with this disease have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin<\/strong> S, which <strong>can distort red blood cells into a sickle, or crescent, shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>These sickle cells also become rigid and sticky<\/strong>, which can slow or <strong>block blood flow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What causes it?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The cause of Sickle cell disease is a <strong>defective gene, called a sickle cell gene<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A person will be born with sickle cell disease <strong>only if two genes are inherited<\/strong>\u2014<strong>one from the mother and one from the father.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early stage<\/strong>: <strong>Extreme tiredness<\/strong> or fussiness from <strong>anemia<\/strong>, painfully <strong>swollen hands and feet<\/strong>, and jaundice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Later stage<\/strong>: Severe <strong>pain, anemia, organ damage<\/strong>, and infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatments<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<li>The only cure for this disease is <strong>bone marrow or stem cell transplantation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>However, <strong>there are treatments that can help relieve symptoms<\/strong>, lessen complications, and prolong life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is Sickle Cell Anaemia?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an inherited blood disorder.
