{"id":12619,"date":"2023-06-29T07:18:57","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T01:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12619"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:23:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:53:14","slug":"state-of-armaments-disarmament-and-international-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/state-of-armaments-disarmament-and-international-security\/","title":{"rendered":"State of Armaments, Disarmament and International Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About State of Armaments, Disarmament and International Security:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>annual assessment of the<\/strong> Sweden-based think tank <strong>Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlights<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>As on January 2023, the <strong>world has 9,576 nuclear weapons<\/strong> in military stockpiles <strong>for potential use.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>That is <strong>86 more than the number in January 2022.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Of this stockpile, an estimated <strong>3,844 warheads were \u2018deployed\u2019 with missiles and aircraft.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Around 2,000 of these \u2018deployed\u2019 weapons <\/strong>\u2014 nearly <strong>all of which belonged to Russia or the USA<\/strong>\u2014were <strong>kept in a state of high operational alert<\/strong>, meaning that they were fitted to missiles or held at airbases hosting nuclear bombers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nine nuclear-armed states<\/strong> \u2014 the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel \u2014 <strong>continue to modernise their nuclear arsenals <\/strong>and deployed several new nuclear-armed or nuclear-capable weapon systems in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>The estimate of the size of <strong>China\u2019s nuclear arsenal increased from 350 warheads in January 2022 to 410 <\/strong>in January 2023.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India was estimated to have a growing stockpile of about 164 nuclear weapons, up from 160<\/strong> the previous year. These weapons were assigned to a maturing nuclear triad of aircraft, land-based missiles and nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pakistan possessed approximately 170 nuclear warheads<\/strong> as of January 2023 \u2014 <strong>up from 165 from the previous year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What are nuclear weapons?<\/h3>\n<p>A nuclear weapon is a device that uses a nuclear reaction to create an explosion. This explosion is much more powerful than that of conventional explosives (like TNT). When a nuclear weapon explodes, it gives off four types of energy: a blast wave, intense light, heat, and radiation.
