or expressways \u2014 the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued detailed guidelines covering design, standards and specifications for such projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, consultants prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for these corridors based on varying standards and specifications, leading to inconsistency across projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Bigger Picture: Vision 2047<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move gains significance because India targets 50,000 km of high-speed corridors by 2036\u201337 under Vision 2047.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These corridors are special sections of national highways providing uninterrupted, end-to-end travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The total length of high-speed corridors stood at just <\/span><b>3,052 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as of <\/span><b>December 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 showing the scale of expansion planned ahead.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How Traffic Will Be Assessed<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHAI has mandated a more rigorous approach to traffic assessment for these projects.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessment must include existing, generated, induced, and diverted traffic, based on proper traffic modelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freight growth rate must be analysed considering economic development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traffic data must be validated from secondary sources such as toll transactions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For freight traffic and determining the Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF), data from GST portals, mining departments and other sources must be cross-validated.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Lane Configuration Norms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guidelines set clear, traffic-based thresholds for how many lanes a corridor should have:<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" Standards<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core principle behind access-controlled highways is protecting the speed of <\/span><b>long-distance through traffic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from local interference.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access must be planned so that through traffic can move at the speed set by the main highway flow \u2014 not slowed by local, access, or cross traffic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There shall be no at-grade intersection of any road with the project highway.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to the highway must be through <\/span><b>properly designed ramps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at planned locations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Underpass height:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In areas with frequent operation of heavy agricultural machinery \u2014 harvesters and laden tractors \u2014 underpass height may be set at <\/span><b>4.50 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, accommodating farm vehicle movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Service roads:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These must be provided in <\/span><b>built-up and urban sections on both sides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with a <\/span><b>drain-cum-footpath<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ensuring local connectivity and pedestrian safety alongside the high-speed corridor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Signage and Road Marking Standards<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHAI has also standardised signage placement for driver clarity and safety:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full overhead gantries (carrying direction signs) shall be placed 5 km and 2 km ahead of an exit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cantilever gantries (carrying advance direction signs) shall be placed 1 km and 500 metres before the exit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lane and other markings must be 150 mm wide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edge-lane markings must be 200 mm wide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Barrier-Less Tolling and Corridor Protection<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHAI is shifting towards a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system \u2014 essentially a barrier-less tolling mechanism that allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new guidelines require provisions for this system to be incorporated into corridor layout design from the outset.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing encroachment: To stop unauthorised access and encroachment on high-speed corridors, a 1-metre-high RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) boundary wall must be constructed along the extreme outer edge of the Right of Way (ROW).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROW refers to the total width of land legally acquired or owned by the government or road authority for construction, operation, maintenance, and future highway expansion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Green and Sustainable Design Elements<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guidelines also embed environmental considerations into corridor planning:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Drip irrigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be provided in the median for watering plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Tree plantation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be made an integral part of project design at the DPR stage itself \u2014 not an
