{"id":126344,"date":"2026-09-26T12:41:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T07:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=126344"},"modified":"2026-09-26T12:41:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-26T07:11:15","slug":"icgs-shaunak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/icgs-shaunak\/","title":{"rendered":"ICGS Shaunak"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>ICGS Shaunak Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Shaunak recently sailed from Chennai for Perth, Australia, as part of the QUAD-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission, aimed at enhancing maritime interoperability among India, Australia, Japan, and the United States. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About ICGS Shaunak<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>Indian Coast Guard ship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically an <\/span><b>Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Samarth-class.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been designed and <\/span><b>built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Ltd.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICGS Shaunak was <\/span><b>commissioned <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on February 21, <\/span><b>2017<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>based at Visakhapatnam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, <\/span><b>Coast Guard Region (East).\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is deployed extensively for<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eez\/\" target=\"_blank\"> EEZ<\/a> surveillance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other duties to safeguard the maritime interests of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>ICGS Shaunak <\/b><b>Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a length of 105 m, the ship draws 2500 tons (GRT) propelled by two 9100 KW <\/span><b>diesel engines.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a maximum speed of 26 knots and has an <\/span><b>endurance of 6500 NM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at economical speed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its features include a 30 mm <\/span><b>CRN 91 Naval Gun, Integrated Bridge System (IBS), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS), Power Management System (PMS), and High Power External Fire Fighting System.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ship is designed to <\/span><b>carry one twin-engine Light Helicopter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>five high-speed boats, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including two Quick Reaction Inflatable Boats for <\/span><b>swift boarding operations, search and rescue, law enforcement, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and maritime patrol.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ship is also capable of carrying <\/span><b>pollution response equipment to contain oil spills <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>QUAD-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It brings together personnel from the four <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/quad\/\" target=\"_blank\">QUAD countries<\/a> (India, United States, Japan, and Australia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for shipboard activities and professional exchanges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aimed at enhancing interoperability, improving coordination, and strengthening mutual trust among the maritime forces.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Six officers,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> described as <\/span><b>Sea Riders,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><b>embarked on ICGS Shaunak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the mission to <\/span><b>sail from Chennai for Perth, Australia.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contingent comprises <\/span><b>two officers each from India and Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>one officer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each <\/span><b>from Australia and the United States.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
