Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, India co-hosted the launch of OneSCD on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About OneSCD<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>global partnership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to advance equity and <\/span><b>transform Sickle Cell Care.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multilateral coordination mechanism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed to strengthen and support existing country-led<\/span><b> Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) programs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and help scale proven approaches to care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hosted By:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was hosted by the Government of the <\/span><b>Federal Republic of Nigeria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and co-organized with <\/span><b>UNICEF, WHO, Africa CDC, the World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will bring together government <\/span><b>leaders, UN agencies, health experts, civil society<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and people with lived experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The partnership focuses on strengthening international <\/span><b>cooperation and improving access to prevention, diagnosis, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment and continuing care for people affected by Sickle Cell Disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Key Facts about Sickle Cell Disease<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>group of inherited blood cell disorders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that affect hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells (RBCs) that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common and severe <\/span><b>type of SCD is <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-sickle-cell-anemia\/\" target=\"_blank\">sickle cell anemia<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>How Does it Affect Blood Flow?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normally, RBCs are disc-shaped and flexible enough to move easily through the blood vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><b>SCD have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which can distort RBCs into a sickle, or crescent, shape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When RBCs sickle, they do not bend or move easily and can block blood flow to the rest of the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sickle-shaped cells can also stick to vessel walls, <\/span><b>causing a blockage that slows or stops the flow of blood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Causes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cause of <\/span><b>SCD is a defective gene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, called a sickle cell gene.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease usually begin in early childhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Early stage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Extreme tiredness or fussiness from anemia (low number of RBCs), painfully swollen hands and feet, and jaundice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Later stage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Severe pain, anemia, organ damage, and infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatments: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant) can cure SCD.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gene therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also being explored as another potential cure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a
