


{"id":12667,"date":"2023-06-30T04:53:27","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T23:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12667"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:42:48","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:12:48","slug":"halogens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/halogens\/","title":{"rendered":"Halogens"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Key findings of the report:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oceans along with absorbing carbon dioxide and moderating the climate also <strong>cool the planet<\/strong> by <strong>releasing short-lived halogens<\/strong> such as chlorine, bromine and iodine<\/li>\n<li>The short-lived halogens from the ocean reduce warming by depleting ozone.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>increase methane\u2019s lifetime<\/strong> in the atmosphere by destroying hydroxyl radicals (OH).<\/li>\n<li>They have increased the global methane burden by 14 per cent and 9 per cent for pre-industrial and present-day conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Halogens <strong>increase the levels of water vapour, a greenhouse gas<\/strong> in the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li>The emission of halogen from the ocean is not the same across the world.<\/li>\n<li>Over continents, the emissions are small while it is bigger in polar regions and some places with higher ozone levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Key facts about Halogens:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The term Halogen in Greek means <strong>salt-producing<\/strong> because <strong>it reacts<\/strong> with many metals to <strong>produce salts.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are a group of elements <strong>located in Group 17 of the periodic table which <\/strong>includes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At).<\/li>\n<li>In 1826, Swedish <strong>chemist Jons Berzelius<\/strong> coined the term halogen for the entire group of elements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Unlike metals, they exist in <strong>all three different states<\/strong> of matter in their standard state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For example,<\/strong> fluorine is found naturally as a gas, bromine as a liquid, and the larger iodine is found naturally as a solid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reactivity:<\/strong> Halogens are the most <strong>reactive nonmetals on the periodic table<\/strong> and are powerful oxidizing agents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is GHG?<\/h3>\n<p>GHG stands for greenhouse gas.
