The growth of textile mills transformed Ahmedabad into an important industrial city and connected its history with labour movements, Swadeshi and Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s Satyagraha.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Historical Basis of the Manchester of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmedabad\u2019s rise as the Manchester of India was supported by its location in a cotton-growing region, availability of local capital, entrepreneurial activity, labour and established trade networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ranchhodlal Chhotalal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> established the first cotton textile mill in Ahmedabad in 1861.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ahmedabad Mill Owners\u2019 Association<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was established in 1891, reflecting the growing importance of the textile industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmedabad had more than 60 textile mills by the communities supported investment in textile mills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Entrepreneurship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encouraged the expansion of modern textile manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Labour availability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supported the growth of a large industrial workforce.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Markets and trade networks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connected Ahmedabad\u2019s textile products with consumers in Gujarat and other parts of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transport facilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped move raw cotton to mills and finished textiles to markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Growing domestic demand <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supported the expansion of textile production.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Manchester of India and the Labour Movement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expansion of textile mills created a large workforce and also led to disputes over wages and working conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anasuya Sarabhai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played an important role in organising Ahmedabad\u2019s textile workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as the Majoor Mahajan Sangh, became an important organisation representing textile resolution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Ahmedabad Mill Strike of 1918<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ahmedabad Mill Strike of 1918<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a dispute between textile workers and mill owners over wages.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mahatma Gandhi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supported the workers and used Satyagraha and non-violence during the dispute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhi undertook a fast and urged workers to maintain discipline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dispute was eventually settled, making it an important example of applying Satyagraha to a labour dispute.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Manchester of India, Swadeshi and National Movement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmedabad\u2019s textile industry also became closely connected with the economic dimension of Indian nationalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/swadeshi-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Swadeshi movement<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encouraged the use of indigenous goods and reduced dependence on imported British textiles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahatma Gandhi promoted khadi, spinning and Swadeshi as instruments of economic self-reliance and national mobilisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhi established the Kochrab Ashram in 1915 and later the <\/span><b>Sabarmati Ashram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ahmedabad.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the history of the Manchester of India is connected not only with industrialisation but also with the economic aspects of the freedom struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Decline of Traditional Textile Mills<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmedabad\u2019s traditional textile mills declined significantly during the later 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Outdated machinery and low productivity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced the competitiveness of older mills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Competition from modern textile <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">units and other textile centres increased.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" Today<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decline of traditional mills did not end Ahmedabad\u2019s textile importance.
