It is mainly composed of methane and has emerged as an important component of the global natural gas trade and energy security.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Liquefied Natural Gas?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>natural gas<\/b> <b>converted into liquid form by cooling it to about -161\u00b0C at atmospheric pressure.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG is composed mainly of <\/span><b>methane (CH\u2084<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), with small quantities of ethane, propane, butane and nitrogen depending on its source and processing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Liquefaction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduces natural gas to about 1\/600th of its original volume, making large-scale transportation by specialised ships economically feasible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG is <\/span><b>colourless and odourless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its liquid form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG should not be confused with <\/span><b>Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which mainly consists of propane and butane.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How is LNG Produced and Used?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LNG value chain involves extraction, processing, liquefaction, transportation, regasification and end use.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural gas extraction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Natural gas is extracted from underground reservoirs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gas processing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Water, carbon dioxide and other impurities are removed from the extracted gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Liquefaction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The purified gas is cooled to about -161\u00b0C, converting it into a liquid and greatly reducing its volume.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transportation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LNG is transported in specially designed cryogenic tankers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regasification: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the destination, LNG is warmed and converted back into natural only on fixed pipeline networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG enables countries to diversify their sources of natural gas and reduce dependence on a single supplier or pipeline route.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flexible transportation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Liquefaction allows natural gas to be transported by sea over long distances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Industrial use:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LNG-derived natural gas is used in sectors such as fertilisers, chemicals, refining and other industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Power generation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Natural gas can be used for electricity generation and can complement variable renewable energy sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Urban energy supply:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Regasified LNG can enter gas distribution networks for domestic and commercial consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global energy trade:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LNG has enabled countries without domestic gas resources to access international natural gas markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>LNG and the Energy Transition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG can support the energy transition by providing a flexible energy source alongside variable renewable energy, but it remains a fossil fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower emissions than coal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural gas generally produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than coal, although this advantage depends on methane leakage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Supports renewable energy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG-based power generation can provide electricity when solar or wind generation is unavailable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Not a zero-emission fuel:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LNG remains a fossil fuel and cannot by itself provide transportation and regasification can reduce LNG\u2019s climate advantage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Higher lifecycle emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Liquefaction and long-distance transportation require additional energy, increasing the overall emissions of LNG.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG can support the transition while renewable energy capacity expands, but its full lifecycle environmental impact must be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Environmental Concerns Associated with LNG<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lower carbon emissions of natural gas compared with coal do not eliminate the environmental concerns associated with LNG.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Methane leakage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Methane can escape during natural gas production, processing, transportation, LNG shipping and regasification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy-intensive liquefaction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Converting natural gas into LNG requires substantial energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Shipping emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Long-distance transportation adds to the overall lifecycle emissions of LNG.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fossil-fuel dependence:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infrastructure lock-in: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large LNG terminals and associated infrastructure can have long operating lifetimes, raising questions about their compatibility with long-term decarbonisation goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IEA&#8217;s 2026 assessment estimates that the global average emissions intensity of LNG from production through regasification was 18.6 g CO\u2082 equivalent per megajoule of delivered LNG in 2025. LNG therefore plays a significant role in diversifying India\u2019s energy supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has developed LNG import and regasification terminals along its western and eastern coasts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), India had eight operational onshore LNG terminals with a combined regasification capacity of about 52.7 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) in 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imported LNG is converted back into natural gas through regasification before being supplied to consumers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regasified LNG is used in fertiliser plants, industries, power generation and city gas distribution networks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG imports help India diversify natural gas supplies and strengthen energy security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, dependence on imported LNG exposes India to international gas prices, shipping costs, exchange-rate fluctuations and geopolitical disruptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>LNG, Energy Security and Renewable Energy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For India, LNG has strategic importance because it provides access to natural gas from international markets and helps diversify energy supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG imports diversify supply sources and provide greater flexibility in meeting natural gas demand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Supply risks: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dependence on imported LNG exposes India to international gas prices, shipping costs, exchange-rate movements and geopolitical disruptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infrastructure needs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater benefits require improvements in domestic gas production, storage, pipeline connectivity, terminal utilisation and supply diversification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Renewable energy support:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LNG-based power generation can complement solar and wind power when renewable generation fluctuates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transition fuel: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG can support the energy transition, but it is not a zero-carbon solution because methane leakage and emissions from liquefaction and transportation affect its overall climate impact.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Way Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future role of LNG requires balancing energy security, affordability and environmental sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve methane monitoring and leak reduction across the LNG supply chain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase the efficiency of liquefaction, shipping and regasification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversify LNG suppliers and supply routes to strengthen energy security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve utilisation of existing LNG infrastructure before creating excessive additional capacity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrate natural gas strategically with renewable energy expansion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li
