{"id":12687,"date":"2023-07-01T06:17:02","date_gmt":"2023-07-01T00:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12687"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:52:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:22:20","slug":"what-is-the-united-nations-global-compact-ungc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-united-nations-global-compact-ungc\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About United Nations Global Compact (UNGC):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNGC is a <strong>call to companies <\/strong>everywhere t<strong>o align their operations and strategies with Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched in 2000<\/strong>, UNGC is the <strong>largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world<\/strong>, with more than 15,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 70 Local Networks.<\/li>\n<li>This <strong>UN-led initiative<\/strong> <strong>promotes activities that contribute to sustainable development<\/strong> goals to create a better world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Derived from core United Nations conventions and declarations<\/strong>, the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact a<strong>re recognized and endorsed in numerous intergovernmental resolution<\/strong>s and outcome documents, <strong>including General Assembly resolutions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Companies that join<\/strong> the compact <strong>are expected to integrate these principles<\/strong> <strong>into their corporate strategies<\/strong>, culture, and day-to-day operations.<\/li>\n<li>Companies are <strong>also expected to advocate the principles publicly<\/strong> and communicate with stakeholders on progress toward meeting the principles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Any company that commits to upholding the principles may join the compact<\/strong>, <strong>which is not legally binding<\/strong> and is purely voluntary.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>The 10 principles for businesses<\/strong>, as stated on the UN Global Compact\u2019s website, <strong>are the following:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Human Rights:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Principle 1:<\/strong> Businesses should <strong>support and respect<\/strong> the protection of internationally proclaimed <strong>human rights<\/strong>; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Principle 2:<\/strong> make sure that they are <strong>not complicit in human rights abuses.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Labour<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Principle 3<\/strong>: Businesses should <strong>uphold the freedom of association<\/strong> and the effective <strong>recognition of the right to collective bargaining<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Principle 4<\/strong>: the <strong>elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Principle 5<\/strong>: the effective <strong>abolition of child labour<\/strong>; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Principle 6<\/strong>: the <strong>elimination of discrimination<\/strong> in respect of employment and occupation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Principle 7:<\/strong> Businesses should support a <strong>precautionary approach to environmental challenges;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Principle 8:<\/strong> undertake initiatives to promote greater <strong>environmental responsibility<\/strong>;
