{"id":12693,"date":"2023-07-01T08:35:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-01T03:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12693"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:55:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:25:21","slug":"shanghai-cooperation-organisation-sco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shanghai-cooperation-organisation-sco\/","title":{"rendered":"Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SCO\u00a0 is an <strong>intergovernmental organization<\/strong> <strong>founded in Shanghai<\/strong>, China, <strong>on 15 June 2001<\/strong> <strong>by<\/strong> the leaders of <strong>China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apart from Uzbekistan<\/strong>, the other <strong>five countries have been a part of the \u2018Shanghai Five\u2019<\/strong> <strong>constituted in 1996<\/strong> by China to address border security issues with four of its neighbours.<\/li>\n<li>The cooperation was <strong>renamed SCO after Uzbekistan joined<\/strong> the organization <strong>in 2001.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>SCO currently comprises eight Member States<\/strong>: <strong>China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India and Pakistan<\/strong> became permanent <strong>members in 2017.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The main objectives<\/strong> of the SCO are as follows:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengthening mutual trust, friendship and neighborly relations<\/strong> among the member states;<\/li>\n<li>Promoting effective <strong>cooperation in political, trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural spheres<\/strong> as well as in the realm of educational, energy, transport, tourism, environmental protection, and other areas;<\/li>\n<li>Jointly <strong>maintaining and safeguarding peace, security and stability<\/strong> in the region; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fostering creation of democratic, fair and rational new international political and economic order.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Structure<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Heads of State Council (HSC) is the supreme decision-making body<\/strong> in the SCO. It <strong>meets once a year and adopts decisions<\/strong> and guidelines on all important matters of the organisation.<\/li>\n<li>The organisation <strong>has two permanent bodies:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>SCO Secretariat based in Beijing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Executive Committee of the <strong>Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) based in Tashkent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>RATS serves to promote cooperation of member states against terrorism, separatism and extremism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The official working languages: Chinese and Russian.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS)?<\/h3>\n<p>RATS as a permanent body was instituted during the Council of Heads of SCO member states meeting on 7 June 2002 in St. Petersburg.
