It was founded in 1917 on the western bank of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The site became a centre for experiments in truth, non violence, self reliance and communal living. Gandhi lived here with Kasturba Gandhi and his followers for several years. The ashram is also closely linked with the Dandi March of 1930.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sabarmati Ashram<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Sabarmati Ashram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is located beside the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad and represents Gandhi\u2019s ideas of simplicity, self reliance, discipline and community life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabarmati Ashram is situated in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, adjoining Ashram Road. It lies about 6.4 km from the town hall on the River Sabarmati.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Establishment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong><\/a> shifted his ashram from Kochrab to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sabarmati-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sabarmati River<\/strong><\/a> site in 1917. The new location provided open land for farming, animal husbandry, cow breeding and Khadi activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gandhi\u2019s Residence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhi lived at Sabarmati with Kasturba Gandhi and his followers. The Bhagavad Gita was recited daily as part of the ashram schedule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ashram Principles: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth, non violence, self sufficiency, simplicity, communal harmony and dignity of labour formed the central principles of life at Sabarmati Ashram.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Important Buildings: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hriday Kunj, Nandini, Vinoba Kutir, Upasana Mandir, Magan Niwas, Udyog Mandir and Somnath Chattralaya are important sites within the ashram complex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The museum preserves writings, photographs, paintings, letters, manuscripts and personal belongings associated with Gandhi and the freedom movement. It was established in 1963.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Institutions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ashram complex and associated institutions supported education, Khadi, village industries, rural sanitation, farming, animal husbandry, research and training.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sabarmati Ashram History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of <\/span><b>Sabarmati Ashram <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflects Gandhi\u2019s transition from an experimental community to a major centre of national and social movements.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kochrab Ashram: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>returning from South Africa<\/strong><\/a> in January 1915, Gandhi established his first Indian ashram at Kochrab in Ahmedabad. It was established at the Kocharab Bungalow of barrister Jivanlal Desai.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Satyagraha Ashram: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kochrab settlement was initially known as the Satyagraha Ashram. Gandhi used it to develop ideas based on truth, non violent resistance and self sufficient community living.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Shift to Sabarmati: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the plague, Gandhi shifted the ashram to open land beside the Sabarmati River in 1917. The site supported experiments in agriculture, animal husbandry, cow breeding and Khadi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Political Activities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While living at Sabarmati, Gandhi launched or led major campaigns including <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/champaran-satyagraha\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Champaran Satyagraha in 1917<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ahmedabad-mill-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ahmedabad mills strike<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/kheda-satyagraha\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kheda Satyagraha in 1918<\/strong><\/a>, Khadi movement in 1918, Rowlatt Act and Khilafat Movements in 1919 and Non Cooperation movement in 1920.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dandi March: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 12 March 1930, Gandhi left Sabarmati with 78 companions for Dandi. The march covered 241 miles and became a major event in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/civil-disobedience-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Disobedience Movement<\/a><\/strong> against the British Salt Law.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gandhi\u2019s Vow: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before leaving for Dandi, Gandhi stated that he would not return to the ashram until India attained independence. He never returned to Sabarmati after the march.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Closure and Preservation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British government seized the ashram after the Salt March. Gandhi decided to disband it by 22 July 1933. It continues to preserve Gandhi\u2019s life, writings, photographs, objects and ideas through its museum, archives and associated institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sabarmati Ashram Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabarmati Ashram architecture reflects Gandhi\u2019s preference for simplicity, local materials, functional spaces, open surroundings and an uncomplicated community lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Design Approach: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhi himself designed the ashram with emphasis on simplicity, self sufficiency and communal living. Local materials and traditional construction methods supported the practical character of the settlement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hriday Kunj: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hriday Kunj was Gandhi\u2019s residence with Kasturba Gandhi. It preserves important personal relics and remains one of the most significant sites within the ashram.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nandini: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nandini served as the ashram\u2019s guest house. It accommodated visitors from India and abroad and is located near Hriday Kunj.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vinoba Kutir: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinoba Kutir was associated with Acharya Vinoba Bhave, who stayed there. It later became known as Mira Kutir because Mirabehn also lived there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Upasana Mandir: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upasana Mandir is an open air prayer ground situated between Hriday Kunj and Magan Niwas. Prayers, devotional songs and readings formed part of the ashram\u2019s spiritual routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magan Niwas: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magan Niwas was associated with Maganlal Gandhi, Gandhi\u2019s cousin and close co worker. It also displayed different designs of charkhas and represented the ashram\u2019s emphasis on productive manual work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Museum Architect: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya was designed by Architect Charles Correa. The museum building was constructed in 1963 and inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 10 May 1963.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Museum Collection: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The museum includes galleries, a library and archives. Its collections contain Gandhi\u2019s letters, manuscripts, photographs, books, paintings and other historical material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sabarmati Ashram Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabarmati Ashram remains significant for its connection with Gandhi\u2019s political campaigns, social experiments, philosophy, national movement and enduring public legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indian National Movement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ashram functioned as an important centre for Gandhi\u2019s political and social activities.
