{"id":12714,"date":"2026-09-10T12:17:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T06:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12714"},"modified":"2026-09-10T14:27:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T08:57:37","slug":"wildlife-crime-control-bureau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-crime-control-bureau\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife Crime Control Bureau"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Wildlife Crime Control Bureau Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change recently constituted a 4-member inquiry team from WCCB to investigate the international organized crime linkage in the mysterious appearance of orangutan in the Balasore district.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Wildlife Crime Control Bureau\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>statutory body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> established by the Government of India to <\/span><b>combat organized wildlife crime <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>constituted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under Section 38Y of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It became <\/span><b>operational <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>2008<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> multidisciplinary body <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><b>officials from Police, Forest, Customs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><b>intelligence &amp; enforcement agencies.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It functions <\/span><b>under <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Headquarter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its headquarters is situated in <\/span><b>New Delhi.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are<\/span><b> five regional offices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located at<\/span><b> Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bhopal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Functions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Collect and collate intelligence <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">related to organised wildlife crime activities and <\/span><b>disseminate the same to state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><b>enforcement agencies f<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or immediate action so as to apprehend the criminals and to <\/span><b>establish a centralised wildlife crime data bank.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Coordination of actions by various officers, state governments,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other authorities in connection with the enforcement of the provisions of this Act, either directly or <\/span><b>through regional and border units set up by the Bureau.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Implementation of obligations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under various<\/span><b> international conventions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and protocols that are in force at present or which may be ratified or acceded to by India in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Assistance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to concerned <\/span><b>authorities in foreign countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and concerned <\/span><b>international organisations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to facilitate coordination and universal action for wildlife crime control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Develop infrastructure and capacity building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>scientific and professional investigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into wildlife crimes and <\/span><b>assist state governments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure <\/span><b>success in prosecutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> related to wildlife crimes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Advise the government of India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> issues relating to wildlife crimes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having national and international ramifications, and <\/span><b>suggest changes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> required in relevant policy and laws from time to time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WCCB<\/span><b> assists in the enforcement of the CITES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to which India has been a party since 1976, and develops capacity through training programmes and <\/span><b>species-identification support for frontline officers and prosecutors.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><b> maintains liaison with the INTERPOL Environmental Crime Programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>World Customs Organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to track cross-border trafficking routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>developed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an<\/span><b> online Wildlife Crime Database Management System <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get real-time data in order to help <\/span><b>analyse trends in crim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e and devise effective measures to prevent and detect wildlife crimes across India.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This system has been successfully used to analyse trends, helping put in preventive measures as well as for successfully carrying out operations such as Operation SAVE KURMA, THUNDERBIRD, WILDNET, LESKNOW,
