{"id":12723,"date":"2023-07-03T02:57:58","date_gmt":"2023-07-02T21:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12723"},"modified":"2025-04-01T21:10:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:40:14","slug":"diversity-for-restoration-d4r-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/diversity-for-restoration-d4r-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity for Restoration (D4R) tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Diversity for Restoration (D4R) tool:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is developed with information on 237 <strong>socio-economically important native trees<\/strong> from the Western Ghats.<\/li>\n<li>It is devised by <strong>Bioversity International.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The team from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), with the help of Bioversity International, modified it to promote restoration programmes in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Features<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The researchers have claimed the tool will help improve the <strong>effectiveness of restoration programmes<\/strong> by providing manifold benefits to interested stakeholders while promoting sustainable development.<\/li>\n<li>The online tool precisely aims to <strong>help better decision-making<\/strong> and bring the best outcome for those plantation programmes.<\/li>\n<li>It could improve socio-ecological perspectives and help stakeholders in decision-making.<\/li>\n<li>The tool helps the user in <strong>identifying species<\/strong> that match their restoration objectives.<\/li>\n<li>It further helps identify species that can resist local stresses and adapt to evolving environmental conditions.<\/li>\n<li>It also helps pinpoint areas and regions to procure the seeds for the required species.<\/li>\n<li>The tool has <strong>information about 100 plant functional<\/strong> traits that have been considered to offer the best possible solution.<\/li>\n<li>Functional traits include information on economic and ecological uses from the tree species chosen for plantation.<\/li>\n<li>The tool informs the user whether the tree species offers timber, fruit, manure or other commercial benefits.<\/li>\n<li>It also informs if the <strong>tree is resilient to physiological stresses<\/strong> such as extreme high or low temperatures, salinity or acidity tolerance in the soil among others.<\/li>\n<li>The tool could also identify windbreakers &#8211; the trees can act as a barrier against high winds.<\/li>\n<li>The user can also know if the species offers better nitrogen fixing and whether it serves as a good pollinator for birds and bees.<\/li>\n<li>This tool is already being used in countries such as Malaysia, Ethiopia, Columbia, Peru, Burkina Faso, Cameroon etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Agroforestry?<\/h3>\n<p>Agroforestry is a land management system that integrates trees or woody perennials with agricultural crops or livestock in the same area.
