It\u2019s named after a fairy-tale character, Rapunzel, who was known for her long hair.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This condition is much <\/span><b>more common among women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men. And in about <\/span><b>8 out of 10 cases, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s seen among<\/span><b> children, adolescent girls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>young women under 30.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What Causes Rapunzel Syndrome?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition is strongly <\/span><b>linked to trichotillomania <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>trichophagia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Trichotillomania <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b>disorder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wherein a person repeatedly feels<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>urge to pull out their own hair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>trichophagia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a condition wherein the <\/span><b>pulled or loose hair is swallowed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These behaviours can occur alongside psychological or emotional difficulties, although not every person with hair-eating behaviour has an underlying psychiatric disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time<\/span><b>,<\/b> <b>repeatedly swallowed hair can collect in the stomach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it <\/span><b>cannot be broken down <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or digested.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>More hair gradually gets trapped <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the existing mass, <\/span><b>making it larger and harder.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, the mass <\/span><b>eventually extends into the small intestine,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resulting in Rapunzel syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Symptom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong> are usually caused by the blockage or related health problems.
