<strong>project proposed by Karnataka<\/strong>, which involves building a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in <strong>Ramanagara district,Karnataka<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It is about <strong>90 km away from Bengaluru<\/strong> and <strong>4 km ahead<\/strong> of the <strong>border with Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The project is proposed at the <strong>confluence of the Cauvery River with <\/strong>its <strong>tributary Arkavathi<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The plan involves building a 99-metre-high, 735-metre-long <strong>concrete gravity dam<\/strong>, an <strong>underground powerhouse<\/strong>, and a water conductor system.<\/li>\n<li>The expected capacity of the dam is 66,000 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water<\/li>\n<li>Once completed, it is <strong>expected to supply<\/strong> over 4 TMC of <strong>water to Bengaluru cityfordrinking purposes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The estimated cost of completing the project is around Rs 14,000 crores, covering an area of over 5,000 hectares.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Issue<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tamil Nadu<\/strong> \u2014 the <strong>lower riparian state<\/strong> \u2014 has <strong>claimed<\/strong> that the <strong>project is against<\/strong> the <strong>interest of the state\u2019s <\/strong>water requirement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tamil Nadu says,Mekedatu area<\/strong> represents the <strong>last free point in Karnataka<\/strong> from <strong>where Cauvery water flows unrestricted into Tamil Nadu,<\/strong> and Mekedatu dam project is an attempt by Karnataka to lock this free flow of water.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>lower riparian state has to give its no-objection for any project<\/strong> that comes up <strong>on the Cauvery <\/strong>as <strong>per the
