{"id":12753,"date":"2026-11-01T12:47:43","date_gmt":"2026-11-01T07:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12753"},"modified":"2026-11-05T10:54:06","modified_gmt":"2026-11-05T05:24:06","slug":"mekedatu-reservoir-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mekedatu-reservoir-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Mekedatu Reservoir Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mekedatu Reservoir Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Karnataka Chief Minister recently said that 2,500 acres of land have been identified for the Mekedatu project, of which only 500 acres of private land belonging to farmers needs to be acquired. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mekedatu Reservoir Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-purpose (drinking water and power) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">project involving the construction of a <\/span><b>balancing reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Kanakapura in the Ramanagara district, <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is about <\/span><b>90 km away from Bengaluru <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>4 km ahead of the border with Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is proposed at the <\/span><b>confluence of the Cauvery River with its tributary Arkavathi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan involves building a 99-metre-high, 735-metre-long <\/span><b>concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><b>underground powerhouse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a water conductor system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will have a capacity to store 67 tmcft of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project envisages using 4.75 TMC of water annually for<\/span><b> drinking-water supply to Bengaluru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and surrounding areas and generating approximately<\/span><b> 400 MW of hydropower.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once built, the Mekedatu dam will <\/span><b>submerge <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than <\/span><b>5,000 hectares<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of protected area in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cauvery-wildlife-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b> Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Mekedatu Project <\/b><b>Issue<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dispute over the project is rooted in the <\/span><b>broader Cauvery water-sharing conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tamil Nadu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>lower riparian state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been <\/span><b>opposing the project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, raising apprehensions that the state would be affected if the project takes shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tamil Nadu says, Mekedatu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">area represents the <\/span><b>last free point in Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from where <\/span><b>Cauvery water flows unrestricted into Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Mekedatu dam project is an attempt by Karnataka to block this free flow of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/amp\/story\/states\/karnataka\/2026\/Nov\/01\/2500-acres-identified-for-mekedatu-project-cm-dk-shivakumar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>NIE<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mekedatu Reservoir Project is a multipurpose drinking water and hydropower project near Kanakapura in Karnataka.
