


{"id":12753,"date":"2026-05-27T12:47:43","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T07:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12753"},"modified":"2026-05-27T13:52:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T08:22:06","slug":"mekedatu-reservoir-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mekedatu-reservoir-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Mekedatu Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mekedatu Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court recently dismissed a petition filed by Tamil Nadu to review a November 2025 decision that termed the State\u2019s challenge to Karnataka\u2019s proposed Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir cum Drinking Water project as \u201cpremature\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mekedatu Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-purpose (drinking water and power) project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving the construction of a <\/span><b>balancing reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Kanakapura in the Ramanagara district, <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is about <\/span><b>90 km away from Bengaluru <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 4 km <\/span><b>ahead of the border with Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is proposed at the <\/span><b>confluence of the Cauvery River with its tributary Arkavathi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan involves building a 99-metre-high, 735-metre-long <\/span><b>concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><b>underground powerhouse, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a water conductor system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will have a capacity to store 67 tmcft of water, <\/span><b>supplying drinking water to Bengaluru <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> generating 400 MW of power.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once built, the Mekedatu dam will submerge more than 5,000 hectares of protected area in the<\/span><b> Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Issue:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tamil Nadu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the l<\/span><b>ower riparian state,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been <\/span><b>opposing the project,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raising apprehensions that the state would be affected if the project takes shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu says,<\/span><b> Mekedatu area represents the last free point in Karnataka from where Cauvery water flows unrestricted into Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Mekedatu dam project is an attempt by Karnataka to block this free flow of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-rejects-review-plea-by-tamil-nadu-on-mekedatu-project\/article71024845.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TH<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mekedatu Project is a multi-purpose (drinking water and power) project involving the construction of a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in the Ramanagara district, Karnataka.
