History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Cotton Day was initiated to recognise the global importance of cotton and its contribution to livelihoods, trade and economic development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2019:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The first World Cotton Day was celebrated on <\/span><b>October 7, 2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the <\/span><b>WTO headquarters in Geneva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative was led by the <\/span><b>Cotton-4 countries, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2021:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>UN General Assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> officially recognised <\/span><b>October 7 as World Cotton Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through Resolution <\/span><b>A\/RES\/75\/318<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day highlights the contribution of cotton to <\/span><b>employment, livelihoods, trade and economic development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in developing and least-developed countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, World Cotton Day has provided a platform for discussions on <\/span><b>sustainable cotton production, international trade, innovation and strengthening the cotton value chain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>World Cotton Day 2026 in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, the <\/span><b>Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will organise <\/span><b>World Cotton Day Celebrations 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with the <\/span><b>5th Global Cotton Conference<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>New Delhi on October 7, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian event will be held under the theme <\/span><b>\u201cCollaborating for a Resilient Cotton Value Chain.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference is expected to bring together <\/span><b>more than 300 delegates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from across the cotton textile value chain, including government officials, industry leaders, policymakers, academicians, international organisations and technical experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Cotton<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotton is a <\/span><b>natural, plant-based fibre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtained from the seeds of cotton plants, mainly belonging to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> genus. It is an important <\/span><b>cash crop and industrial raw material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, supporting farmers, textile industries, employment and international trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Botanical source:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cotton fibre is obtained from the <\/span><b>seed hairs (lint)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of plants belonging to the genus <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Major species:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Four main cultivated species are:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium hirsutum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Upland cotton; accounts for the largest share of global production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium barbadense<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Egyptian\/Pima cotton; known for long and fine fibres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium arboreum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Indigenous\/Desi cotton.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossypium herbaceum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Desi cotton.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Major uses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cotton is primarily used in <\/span><b>textile and clothing manufacturing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while cottonseed is used for <\/span><b>oil extraction and animal feed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Economic importance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It provides income and employment across the <\/span><b>farm-to-fabric value chain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including cultivation, ginning, spinning, weaving, processing and garment manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cotton generally requires a <\/span><b>warm growing season<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adequate moisture during growth and relatively dry conditions during boll opening and harvesting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soil:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It grows well in <\/span><b>deep, fertile and well-drained soils<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
