{"id":12777,"date":"2026-06-24T11:50:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T06:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12777"},"modified":"2026-06-24T16:47:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T11:17:56","slug":"international-maritime-organisation-imo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-maritime-organisation-imo\/","title":{"rendered":"International Maritime Organisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>International Maritime Organisation Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Secretary-General\u00a0 has announced a plan to evacuate all the ships \u2014 and the 11,000 seafarers on them \u2014 stranded in the Persian Gulf due to the war in West Asia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Maritime Organisation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>specialized agency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent pollution from ships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>global standard-setting authority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><b>safety, security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and environmental <\/span><b>performance of international shipping.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Mandate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Background:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was established as the <\/span><b>Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) in 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1959 and was renamed <\/span><b>International Maritime Organization in 1982.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Governance of the organisation<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is the <\/span><b>highest Governing Body of the IMO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It consists of all Member States, and it <\/span><b>meets once every two years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in regular sessions. The Assembly is responsible for approving the work program, voting the budget and electing the Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Council:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the <\/span><b>Executive Organ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the IMO and and consists of <\/span><b>40 elected members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the Organization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Committees:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>five policy-making committees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are responsible for the development, review, updating, and approval of the organization\u2019s guidelines and regulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Funding for the organization comes from <\/span><b>contributions by member states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as <\/span><b>voluntary donations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>commercial activities.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Members:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It currently has <\/span><b>176 Member States.
