{"id":12777,"date":"2025-10-19T13:50:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T08:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12777"},"modified":"2025-10-24T17:48:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T12:18:46","slug":"international-maritime-organisation-imo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-maritime-organisation-imo\/","title":{"rendered":"International Maritime Organisation (IMO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>International Maritime Organisation Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States President Donald Trump recently said that he was \u201coutraged\u201d that the International Maritime Organisation would be voting on whether to impose a carbon emissions price on global shipping and called it a \u201cGlobal Green New Scam Tax.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Maritime Organisation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>United Nations&#8217; specialised agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> prevention of marine pollution by ships.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><b>176 Member States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and three Associate Members, IMO is <\/span><b>based in London.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMO is the <\/span><b>global standard-setting authority <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted, and universally implemented.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMO<\/span><b> formulates regulations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on shipping safety, maritime security, and environmental protection but <\/span><b>does not enforce them.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a member state adopts a regulation, it becomes part of that country\u2019s domestic law.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It contributes directly to <\/span><b>UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which focuses on the <\/span><b>conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organisation also <\/span><b>deals with legal matters such as liability, compensation, and facilitation of maritime traffic.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Organisational Structure:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Assembly <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the <\/span><b>supreme governing body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, comprising all member states.
