


{"id":128331,"date":"2026-10-10T13:11:35","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T07:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=128331"},"modified":"2026-10-10T13:11:35","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T07:41:35","slug":"trade-and-development-report-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/trade-and-development-report-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Trade and Development Report 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Trade and Development Report Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s share in global greenfield investments during 2020-25, at 5.7%, is more than double China\u2019s share in such investments during the same period, according to the latest Trade and Development Report 2026 report by UNCTAD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Trade and Development Report\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First launched in <\/span><b>1981<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is issued every year by the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/unctad-upsc\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report analyses current economic trends and major policy issues of international concern and makes suggestions for addressing these issues at various levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Trade and Development Report\u00a0<\/b><strong>2026 Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Global trade <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>projected to grow by 4% in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>slower than the previous year\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.4%, but well above what was anticipated when the conflict in the Middle East began.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global trade reached a <\/span><b>record $35 trillion in 2025.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report indicates higher trade values resulting from energy price increases and export controls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While<\/span><b> trade between China and the US has fallen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by more than 20% since 2024, <\/span><b>East Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><b>expanded trade with both China and North America.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Developing economies, particularly India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are expected to <\/span><b>drive notable growth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite overall global economic slowdowns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global economic growth will likely<\/span><b> slow to 2.6% in 2026,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> down from 2.9% last year, but<\/span><b> developing economies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are projected to <\/span><b>grow 4% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this year, down from 4.7% in 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia is projected to contribute <\/span><b>59% of global growth in 2026.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report showed that governments increasingly use industrial, trade, financial, and technology policies to pursue economic and national security objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Artificial intelligence products,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comprising advanced computing equipment deployed primarily in new data centres, have become the<\/span><b> main driver of merchandise trade; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82% of value added accrues to four supplier segments in this category.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>From 2020 to 2025, strategic sectors<\/b> <b>grew <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 16% to <\/span><b>44% of global greenfield investment.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among these strategic sectors, <\/span><b>artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and related technologies attracted the <\/span><b>largest share of 12.4%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the $845.7 billion of overall global greenfield investment that took place within this period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI infrastructure was <\/span><b>followed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>semiconductor value chain (8.1%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><b>energy transition technologies and services (7.8%).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Strategic investment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>concentrated in Europe (28.4%) and North America (28%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even among developing economies, capital is primarily funnelled into <\/span><b>developing Asia (26.5%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with<\/span><b> China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as leading jurisdictions for new investments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>India Specific Findings:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India accounted for <\/span><b>5.7% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><b>global greenfield investments during 2020 to 2025, followed by Malaysia (4%), Indonesia (3.8%), and China (2.8%).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India <\/span><b>ranks high<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in terms of the<\/span><b> number of industrial policies it has implemented <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over the last two decades or so.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>During 2008-21,<\/b> <b>India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implemented <\/span><b>1,416 industrial policies, behind only China (4,201) and the U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (4,025)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>much shorter period 2022-25,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data shows <\/span><b>India implemented 707 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrial policy measures, <\/span><b>about half the number <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it did in the <\/span><b>2008-21 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">period.\u00a0 It <\/span><b>fell in the rankings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during this period, with the U.S., China, Australia, and Brazil all implementing more industrial policies than India did.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is the <\/span><b>fastest-growing major economy, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><b> GDP projected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>expand by 7.3% in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>6.8% in 2027 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to robust domestic demand, increasing manufacturing capacity, and public infrastructure programmes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It added that these factors are together sustaining growth despite India\u2019s heavy reliance on oil imports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India continues to post <\/span><b>dynamic growth in household consumption, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated at<\/span><b> 6.9% this year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 5.6% next.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Economy\/indias-share-of-global-greenfield-investments-more-than-double-chinas-in-2020-25\/article71564075.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>TH<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trade and Development Report is issued every year by the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
