


{"id":12834,"date":"2023-07-05T02:55:55","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T21:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12834"},"modified":"2025-04-01T22:07:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T16:37:12","slug":"about-national-chambal-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/about-national-chambal-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"About National Chambal Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A proposal in this regard was recently sent to the state government by the deputy conservator of forest (wildlife) of the National Chambal Sanctuary project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About National Chambal Sanctuary:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>National Chambal Sanctuary, <strong>also called the<\/strong> <strong>National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>, is a 5,400 sq . km <strong>tri-state protected riverine sanctuary<\/strong> <strong>along<\/strong> 425 km length of the <strong>Chambal River and ravines<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It lies at the <strong>tri-junction of<\/strong> three states <strong>Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The main focus of the sanctuary is <strong>to protect the critically endangered Gharial, Red-crowned roof turtle &amp; endangered Ganges dolphin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chambal supports the largest population of Gharials<\/strong> in the wild.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>listed as an important bird area (IBA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Topography<\/strong>: The topography is <strong>full of ravines, hills &amp; sandy beaches.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation<\/strong>: It is part of the <strong>Kathiar-Gir dry deciduous forest ecoregion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Fauna:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Other animals which are also in the Threatened category like <strong>mugger crocodile, smooth-coated otters, Striped Hyena &amp; Indian wolfs <\/strong>are also found here.<\/li>\n<li>Chambal River <strong>support 8 out of 26 rare species of turtle family like Indian narrow-headed soft shell turtle<\/strong>, three- striped roof turtle &amp; crowned river turtle.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Mammals are also seen, which include <strong>Sambhar deer, Neel Gai (blue bull), Indian gazelle, Rhesus Monkey<\/strong>, Hanuman Langur, Indian grey &amp; small Asian mongoose, Bengal Fox etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>Key facts about the Chambal River:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the <strong>tributaries of the Yamuna<\/strong> River and the <strong>most pollution-free river in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>originates at the Singar Chouri peak on the northern slopes of the Vindhya mountains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>On its south, east and west<\/strong>, the basin is <strong>bounded by the Vindhyan mountain<\/strong> ranges and on the <strong>northwest by the Aravallis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Hadauti plateau in Rajasthan occurs in the upper catchment<\/strong> of the Chambal River to the southeast of the Mewar Plains.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries: Banas, Kali Sindh, Sipra, Parbati, etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Dams<\/strong> on the River: <strong>Gandhi Sagar Dam, Rana Pratap Sagar Dam<\/strong>, Jawahar Sagar Dam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What are Gharials?<\/h3>\n<p>They are fresh-water crocodiles. They live in deep fast-flowing rivers. Compared to alligators and crocodiles, a gharial has a very long and narrow snout (instead of a broad snout). Globally Gharial is found only in India and Nepal.
