found that there is a 73 per cent decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations between 1970 and 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Living Planet Report 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>published biennially<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the World<\/span><b> Wide Fund for Nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WWF).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a comprehensive study of trends in global biodiversity and the health of the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year it is the <\/span><b>16th edition of the report.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It utilises the <\/span><b>Living Planet Index (LPI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to track average trends in wildlife populations.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LPI is a measure of the state of the <\/span><b>world\u2019s biological diversity based on population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trends of <\/span><b>vertebrate species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from terrestrial, <\/span><b>freshwater and marine habitats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It measures the <\/span><b>average rate of change in population size<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the species monitored.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Key Highlights of Living Planet Report 2026<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global Trend:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The average size of <\/span><b>monitored vertebrate populations declined<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 73% over 52 years between 1970 and 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecosystem-wise Decline:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>strongest declines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were seen in <\/span><b>freshwater ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with average population sizes plunging 85%, followed by <\/span><b>terrestrial ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at 69% and <\/span><b>marine ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at 59%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Region wise decline:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At a regional level, the steepest declines since 1970 have been recorded in <\/span><b>Latin America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Caribbean <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(-95%), <\/span><b>Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (-80%), and <\/span><b>Asia and the Pacific<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (-49%).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recovery of Wildlife:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The report highlights <\/span><b>recoveries in populations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>green turtles, bluefin tuna, tigers and southern African elephants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report <\/span><b>noted a rise in global wild tiger numbers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2010 and 2025 \u2014 from 3,200 to around 5,700 individuals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Causes of Wildlife Decline:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Habitat loss and degradation, overexploitation of resources, climate change, and impact of invasive species, pollution and disease are some of
