{"id":12840,"date":"2024-05-14T12:51:02","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T07:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12840"},"modified":"2025-09-30T11:54:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T06:24:06","slug":"chabahar-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chabahar-port\/","title":{"rendered":"Chabahar Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>long-term agreement<\/strong>, to be valid for 10 years and extended subsequently, was being negotiated by the two sides over the past three years and had been held up over differences on a clause related to arbitration.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>replaces an initial pact inked in 2016<\/strong> that covered India\u2019s operations at the Shahid Beheshti terminal of Chabahar port and has been renewed annually.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone (IPGCFZ),<\/strong> a <strong>subsidiary of<\/strong> state-run <strong>India Global Ports Limited<\/strong> (IGPL), <strong>currently operates<\/strong> the <strong>Shahid Beheshti terminal at Chabahar<\/strong> port.<\/li>\n<li>This is the <strong>first time India will take over<\/strong> the <strong>management of an overseas port<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Chabahar Port:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>deep-water port<\/strong> located in <strong>Iran\u2019<\/strong>s Sistan-Baluchistan province.<\/li>\n<li>It is on the <strong>Gulf of Oman<\/strong> at the <strong>mouth of the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>only Iranian port<\/strong> having <strong>direct access to the Indian Ocean<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>consists oftwo separate ports<\/strong> called <strong>Shahid Beheshti<\/strong> and <strong>Shahid Kalantari.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s geographic <strong>proximity to<\/strong> countries such as <strong>Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India<\/strong>, as well as its status as a <strong>key transit center on<\/strong> the burgeoning <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-north-south-transport-corridor-instc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)<\/strong><\/a>, gives it the potential to develop into one of the most important commercial hubs in the region.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>INSTC<\/strong> is a <strong>multi-modal transportation route linking<\/strong> the <strong>Indian Ocean and<\/strong> the <strong>Persian Gulf to<\/strong> the <strong>Caspian Sea via Iran<\/strong>, and onward <strong>to northern Europe via<\/strong> Saint Petersburg in <strong>Russia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kandla port<\/strong> in Gujarat is <strong>550 Nautical Miles from Chabahar<\/strong> port, while the distance between <strong>Chabahar and Mumbai<\/strong> is <strong>786 Nautical Miles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chabahar Project:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In May <strong>2016<\/strong>, <strong>India signed<\/strong> a <strong>tripartite agreement<\/strong> with <strong>Iran and Afghanistan<\/strong> to develop the <strong>Shahid Beheshti Terminal<\/strong> at Chabahar.<\/li>\n<li>It is India&#8217;s <strong>first foreign port project.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The deal agreement aims to <strong>establish an international transport and transit corridor in Chabahar.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The construction of the Chabahar Port and the construction of a <strong>rail line from Chabahar Port to Zahedan <\/strong>are the major highlights of this project.<\/li>\n<li>The idea was that the port would enable India <strong>to bypass Pakistan and access Afghanistan,<\/strong> and <strong>ultimately Central Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Moreover, the port could <strong>serve as a hub for transit trade between India, Iran, and Afghanistan<\/strong> and provide an alternative route to the traditional Silk Road that passes through China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: Which countries border the Gulf of Oman?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-oman-upsc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf of Oman<\/a> or Sea of Oman, also known as the Gulf of Makran or Sea of Makran, forms the only entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Indian Ocean.
