It can also survive in poorly maintained <\/span><b>swimming pools in rare cases.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one species of Naegleria, Naegleria fowleri, infects people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It causes <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/primary-amebic-meningoencephalitis-pam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis<\/a> or PAM.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Humans Infection Process<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is typically <\/span><b>acquired through the nasal passage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and mouth when a person goes swimming, diving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amoeba then migrates through the <\/span><b>olfactory nerve to the brain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it causes severe inflammation and destruction of brain tissue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Naegleria fowleri infection <\/span><b>does not spread from person to person<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nor does it manifest symptoms when contracted in other forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infection is primarily <\/span><b>associated with a warm freshwater environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially during hot summer months when water temperatures are higher.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Key facts about Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by Naegleria fowleri.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>non-communicable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and people cannot get infected with Naegleria fowleri from drinking water contaminated with the amoeba.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Symptoms<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes <\/span><b>headache, fever, nausea and vomiting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Later on, the patient may have a stiff neck and experience confusion, seizures, hallucinations and slip into a state of coma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people with PAM die within 1 to 18 days after symptoms begin.
