{"id":12888,"date":"2026-02-25T13:50:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T08:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12888"},"modified":"2026-02-25T14:13:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T08:43:05","slug":"periyar-tiger-reserve-ptr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/periyar-tiger-reserve-ptr\/","title":{"rendered":"Periyar Tiger Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Periyar Tiger Reserve Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Periyar Tiger Reserve has initiated Phase III of All India Tiger Estimation 2025-26, aimed at assessing the tiger population across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Periyar Tiger Reserve<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located in the Idukki <\/span><b>district of Kerala.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named <\/span><b>after the Periyar River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is set high at <\/span><b>Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Western Ghats, adjacent to the <\/span><b>border with Tamil Nadu.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>surrounds the Periyar Lake,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was created in 1895 by building a dam across the Periyar River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Terrain:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The terrain is <\/span><b>hilly and undulating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a maximum altitude of 2016 m. The highest <\/span><b>peak is Kottamala (2016 m).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rivers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Two major rivers namely <\/span><b>Periyar and Pamba drain the area.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dams:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mullaperiyar Dam is located within the PTR.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tribes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is home to many tribal communities, including the <\/span><b>Mannans and the Palians.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vegetation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It mainly comprises <\/span><b>tropical evergreen forests, semi- evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transitional fringe evergreen forests, grasslands, and eucalyptus plantations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flora:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Teak, mangoes, rosewood, jamun, jacarandas, terminalias, tamarind, royal ponciana, bamboo, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elephants, Wild Pigs, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, and Tiger.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major four species of primates are also found at Periyar \u2013 the rare <\/span><b>lion-tailed macaque,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Nilgiri Langur, Gee\u2019s Golden Langur, Common Langur, and <\/span><b>Bonnet Macaque.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also being considered as the <\/span><b>habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/Madurai\/periyar-tiger-reserve-to-launch-phase-iii-tiger-monitoring-from-february-25\/article70672469.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala begins Phase III of All India Tiger Estimation 2025-26.
