The state has started restoring the species after its disappearance from local forests for nearly 100 years. Eight Wild Buffaloes brought from Assam\u2019s Kaziranga National Park have been shifted to a larger enclosure in the Supkhar range. The programme aims to help them adapt to the local environment and gradually restore their population in their historical habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wild Buffalo Reintroduction in Kanha Tiger Reserve<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Wild Buffalo Reintroduction in <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/kanha-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kanha Tiger Reserve <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to restore the species in Madhya Pradesh through a phased process of acclimatisation and eventual release into the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objective of the Initiative: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme aims to bring Wild Buffaloes back to Madhya Pradesh\u2019s forests after nearly a century and strengthen biodiversity conservation by restoring the species to its historical habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Source Population: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight Wild Buffaloes were brought from <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/kaziranga-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kaziranga National Park<\/strong><\/a> in Assam, covering approximately 2,200 km. The group consists of six females and two males.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phased Arrival of Buffaloes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first group of four animals, comprising three females and one male, arrived on April 28. Another four, including three females and one male, arrived on May 9.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Initial Quarantine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The animals were initially kept in a specially constructed one hectare enclosure in the Supkhar range to complete quarantine and adjust to local climatic and environmental conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Selection of Supkhar: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supkhar range was selected because evidence indicates that Wild Buffaloes were historically present in this region. The site supports efforts to restore the species within its former distribution area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Population Target: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state government aims to establish a population of 50 Wild Buffaloes in the Kanha region over the next three years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conservation Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project seeks to restore a locally disappeared species, strengthen biodiversity and improve the ecological value of the region through the recovery of its historical wildlife population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Wild Buffalo in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/asiatic-wild-buffalo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Buffalo<\/a><\/strong> (Bubalus arnee), also known as the wild water buffalo, is a large wild bovine associated primarily with grasslands and wetlands in Northeast India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific Name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientific name of the Wild Buffalo is Bubalus arnee. It is also commonly known as the wild water buffalo and is an important species for wildlife conservation in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural Distribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species is primarily associated with Northeast India, particularly Assam. Its historical distribution also included parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wild Buffaloes inhabit grasslands, swamps, marshes and river valleys. Historically, they were also found in the sal forests and grasslands of Central India, particularly in present day Chhattisgarh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>IUCN Conservation Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wild Buffalo is classified as Endangered on the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/iucn-red-list\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Legal Protection in India: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972<\/strong><\/a>, the Wild Buffalo is listed in Schedule I, which provides it with the highest level of legal protection under the Act.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological Importance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wild Buffaloes are associated with grassland and wetland ecosystems.
