{"id":129100,"date":"2026-10-15T14:25:43","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T08:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=129100"},"modified":"2026-10-15T15:42:21","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T10:12:21","slug":"southern-indian-ocean-fisheries-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/southern-indian-ocean-fisheries-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the central government has approved India\u2019s accession to the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>international fishing agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signed in Rome on 7th July 2006 and <\/span><b>entered into force in June 2012.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aimed at <\/span><b>enhancing its role in managing ocean resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and creating opportunities for Indian fishing vessels to operate in the <\/span><b>southern Indian Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while adhering to international regulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Objectives<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure the <\/span><b>long-term conservation and sustainable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use of the <\/span><b>fishery resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the area through cooperation among the Contracting Parties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To promote the <\/span><b>sustainable development of fisheries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Area<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SIOFA Agreement covers fishery resources including <\/span><b>fish, molluscs, crustaceans and other sedentary species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the area, <\/span><b>but excluding highly migratory species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Annex I of UNCLOS).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Structure<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Meeting of the Parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is the <\/span><b>governing body of SIOFA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is composed of all the Contracting Parties. It <\/span><b>meets at least annually.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Scientific Committee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>subsidiary body that<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acts as an advisory body to the Meeting of the Parties. It conducts scientific assessment, encourages and promotes cooperation and provides scientific advice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Secretariat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Implements and <\/span><b>coordinates the administrative provisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Agreement and maintains records of the proceedings of the Meeting of the Parties and its subsidiary bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>India and SIOFA<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of now, India is <\/span><b>classified as a Cooperating Non-Contracting Party<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CNCP) to the SIOFA, which limits its participation in decision-making processes from 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Significance to India<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accession as a <\/span><b>Contracting Party<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would enable India to participate fully in these bodies and provide access to scientific data, research programmes, and stock assessments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will open up <\/span><b>new fishing opportunities for the Indian fishers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India will also play a key role in <\/span><b>preserving marine resources,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensuring their long-term viability and supporting the livelihoods of Indian fishing communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2323370&amp;reg=48&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement is an international fishing agreement signed in Rome on 7th July 2006 and entered into force in June 2012.
