Iceland has once again secured its position as the most peaceful country in the world, as per the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI).<\/span><\/p>\n
About Global Peace Index<\/b><\/h2>\n

Produced by the <\/span>Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP),<\/b> the GPI is the world\u2019s leading measure of global peacefulness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
It ranks <\/span>163 independent states<\/b> and territories according to their level of peacefulness, <\/span>covering 99.7 percent of the world\u2019s population.<\/b><\/li>\n
It uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators to measure the state of peace across <\/span>three domains<\/b>: the <\/span>level of Societal Safety and Security<\/b>; the <\/span>extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict<\/b>; and the <\/span>degree of Militarisation.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Highlights of <\/b>Global Peace Index <\/b>2025<\/b><\/h2>\n

It is the<\/span> 19th edition<\/b> of the GPI.<\/span><\/li>\n
It finds that<\/span> global peacefulness continues to decline <\/b>and that many of the leading factors that precede major conflicts are higher than they have been since the end of WWII.<\/span><\/li>\n
More countries <\/b>are <\/span>increasing their levels of militarisation.<\/b><\/li>\n
There are currently <\/span>59 active state-based conflicts<\/b>, the <\/span>most since the end of WWII <\/b>and three more than the prior year.<\/span><\/li>\n
Last year, <\/span>17 countries recorded over 1,000 conflict deaths.<\/b><\/li>\n
Additionally, the <\/span>successful resolution<\/b> of conflicts is <\/span>lower than at any point in the last 50 years.<\/b><\/li>\n
Conflicts that ended in a decisive victory <\/b>fell from 49 percent in the 1970s to <\/span>nine percent in the 2010s<\/b>, while <\/span>conflicts that ended through peace agreements <\/b>fell from 23 percent to <\/span>four percent<\/b> over the same period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
This year\u2019s results found that the <\/span>average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0.36 percent.<\/b><\/li>\n
Iceland <\/b>remains the <\/span>most peaceful country <\/b>in the world, a position it has held <\/span>since 2008<\/b>. <\/span>It is joined<\/b> at the top of the index <\/span>by Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Switzerland.<\/b><\/li>\n
Russia<\/b>, for the first time, is the <\/span>least peaceful country<\/b> in the world on the 2025 GPI, <\/span>followed by Ukraine, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Yemen.<\/b><\/li>\n
Western and Central Europe<\/b> is the<\/span> most peaceful region i<\/b>n the world, home to eight of the ten most peaceful countries, although its peacefulness has been falling over the last four years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
South America<\/b> was the <\/span>only region<\/b> in the world <\/span>to record an improvement in peacefulness<\/b> last year.<\/span><\/li>\n
The <\/span>Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region<\/b> remains the<\/span> world\u2019s least peaceful region.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n
South Asia,<\/b> the <\/span>second least peaceful region<\/b> globally, experienced the largest regional decline in peacefulness.<\/span><\/li>\n
India <\/b>was <\/span>ranked 115<\/b> on the GPI 2025, <\/span>up one position<\/b> from its 2024 spot.<\/span><\/li>\n
The <\/span>most peaceful Asian countries<\/b> were <\/span>Singapore (6th), Japan (12th), Malaysia (13th), Bhutan (21st), <\/b>and Mongolia (37th).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
