{"id":129186,"date":"2026-10-16T14:49:45","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T09:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=129186"},"modified":"2026-10-16T14:49:45","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T09:19:45","slug":"sukhna-wetland-and-sauj-jheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sukhna-wetland-and-sauj-jheel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sukhna Wetland and Sauj Jheel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sukhna Wetland and Sauj Jheel Latest News<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has added Sukhna Wetland and Sauj Jheel to the List of Wetlands of International Importance, bringing its total number of \u201cRamsar Sites\u201d to 103.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sukhna Wetland<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is located at the edge of <\/span><b>the city of Chandigarh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and at the <\/span><b>base of the Outer Himalayas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>peri-urban reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that plays an important role in regulating sediment and water flows from the surrounding catchment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>supports a range of habitats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from open water to littoral vegetation, scrub and forest, providing habitat for diverse species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is particularly important for resident waterbirds and others migrating along the <\/span><b>Central Asian Flyway, providing feeding, breeding, roosting and wintering habitats.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Notable species include the <\/span><b>vulnerable<\/b> <b>common pochard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Aythya ferina) and the <\/span><b>endangered<\/b> <b>Pallas\u2019s fish eagle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Haliaeetus leucoryphus). The shallow littoral habitats also support reptiles such as the endangered <\/span><b>black pond turtle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Geoclemys hamiltonii).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About Sauj Jheel\u00a0 <\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located in the <\/span><b>state of Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>shallow lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounded by farmland in the <\/span><b>floodplain of the Ganga River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms part of a larger network of wetlands, contributing to ecological connectivity in the wider landscape, and is <\/span><b>close to Saman Bird Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vegetation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The lake supports diverse wetland-associated vegetation, including the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) and the <\/span><b>wild sugarcane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Saccharum spontaneum).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Notable waterbird species recorded at the Site include the <\/span><b>vulnerable sarus crane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Grus antigone) and <\/span><b>greater spotted eagle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Clanga clanga).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleaseDetail.aspx?PRID=2324120&amp;reg=1&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sukhna Wetland and Sauj Jheel are recently designated as Ramsar Sites.
