Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently proposed making Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) mandatory for all new car models from October 1, 2030, to help reduce road accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Advanced Emergency Braking System\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEBS is an <\/span><b>active vehicle safety technolog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y designed to<\/span><b> prevent collisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<strong> r<\/strong><\/span><b>educe their severity.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>combination of braking and sensor technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> integrated into automobiles to recognise and prevent crashes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system <\/span><b>continuously monitors the road ahead, warns the driver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it detects a potential collision with another vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist, and <\/span><b>automatically applies the brakes if the driver fails to respond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEBS is a <\/span><b>key feature of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a collection of more than 100 electronic technologies designed to improve road safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How does AEBS work?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEBS <\/span><b>operates continuously <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while a vehicle is moving.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It uses a <\/span><b>combination of radar sensors, cameras, or <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-lidar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)<\/a> technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, typically mounted near the front bumper or windscreen, to <\/span><b>assess the distance from obstacles,<\/b> <b>their relative speed, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the time remaining before a potential collision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The system generally works in <\/span><b>three stages:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Warning stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: When the <\/span><b>system detects an obstacle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approaching rapidly and calculates that a collision is imminent, it <\/span><b>issues an audio-visual alert,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as a dashboard warning light and a beeping sound, prompting the driver to brake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Partial or pre-braking stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If the driver does not respond, the system may apply a <\/span><b>brief, sharp brake pulse as a warning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pre-charge the braking system to maximise stopping power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Full emergency braking stage:<\/b> <b>If the driver still fails to take action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a collision is imminent, <\/span><b>AEBS automatically applies maximum braking force.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEBS can reduce the impact of various crashes, including head-on, rear-end, right-turn, and pedestrian collisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Which countries have adopted AEBS?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>European Union<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made AEBS mandatory for new commercial vehicle and truck models from 2015.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under updated safety regulations, the requirement was extended to every newly registered passenger vehicle sold by May 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Japan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adopted AEBS early, making it legally mandatory for all new passenger vehicles from the year 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>United States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Between 2016 and 2022, a voluntary agreement between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and 20 major automakers led to basic AEBS becoming standard in more than 95 percent of new cars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Kingdom:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>United Kingdom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires AEBS as standard on all newly registered passenger cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>China <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has also seen widespread adoption of AEBS, with more than 60 per cent of new passenger vehicles sold in the country already featuring the
