{"id":130650,"date":"2026-10-26T13:06:37","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T07:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=130650"},"modified":"2026-10-26T16:52:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T11:22:04","slug":"saidongar-1-pumped-storage-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/saidongar-1-pumped-storage-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Saidongar-1 Project Faces Opposition Over Tree Cutting in Maharashtra"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental activists and opposition parties recently came out against the \u201crampant\u201d cutting of hundreds of trees for Torrent Power\u2019s Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project in Raigad district of Maharashtra.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saidongar 1 (Karjat) <\/span><b>Off-Stream Open Loop Pumped Storage project (PSP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a major hydro-energy initiative located in Karjat taluka, Raigad district of<\/span><b> Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is <\/span><b>adjacent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bhimashankar-wildlife-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Pune district in the <\/span><b>Sahyadri-Western Ghats ranges.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a capacity of <\/span><b>3,000 MW, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will be <\/span><b>India\u2019s largest PSP.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will comprise <\/span><b>two reservoirs.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> upper reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be <\/span><b>constructed on the hilltop <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a maximum dam height of 27 m to create the<\/span><b> desired storage capacity,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while the <\/span><b>lower reservoir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have a maximum height of 59 m and shall be constructed <\/span><b>across River Pej.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises 10 reversible pump turbines, each of 300 MW.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being developed by<\/span><b> Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Private Limited<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a subsidiary of Gujarat-based Torrent Power Ltd.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once operational, it will <\/span><b>reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.55 million tons per year, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roughly equivalent to<\/span><b> taking around 1 million cars off the road <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annually.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an annual energy production of 6,241 GWh, the project is expected to contribute to grid reliability and energy security in the state and other regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/states\/maharashtra\/2026\/Oct\/24\/activists-opposition-parties-oppose-rampant-tree-felling-for-hydropower-project-in-raigad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>NIE<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project is a major hydro-energy initiative located in Karjat taluka, Raigad district of Maharashtra.
