{"id":13123,"date":"2025-09-09T04:57:39","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T23:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13123"},"modified":"2025-09-09T17:05:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T11:35:48","slug":"duchennes-muscular-dystrophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/duchennes-muscular-dystrophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Social Justice &amp; Empowerment, Government of India, observes World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Day every year on 7th September.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>rare genetic disorder <strong>which <\/strong>is characterized by <strong>progressive muscle degeneration<\/strong> and weakness.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by a <\/span><b>genetic problem in producing dystrophin,<\/b> <b>a protein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that protects muscle fibers from breaking down when exposed to enzymes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was first described by the French <\/span><b>neurologist Guillaume Benjamin<\/b> <b>Amand Duchenne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1860.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is characterized by <\/span><b>progressive muscle degeneration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and weakness due to the alterations of a protein called dystrophin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-systemic condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting many parts of the body, which results in deterioration of the <\/span><b>skeletal, heart, and lung muscles.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dystrophin gene is found on the <\/span><b>X-chromosome,<\/b> <b>it primarily affects males<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while females are typically carriers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can begin as <\/span><b>early as age 2 or 3<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, first affecting the proximal muscles (those close to the core of the body) and later affecting the distal limb muscles (those close to the extremities).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, the <\/span><b>lower external muscles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are affected before the upper external muscles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The affected child might have difficulty jumping, running, and walking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms include enlargement of the calves, a waddling gait, and lumbar lordosis (an inward curve of the spine).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatments:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Presently available treatments are gene therapy, exon skipping, stop codon read-through and gene repair.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=2164676#:~:text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIB<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Duchenne\u2019s Muscular Dystrophy is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to the alterations of a protein called dystrophin.
