{"id":13135,"date":"2023-07-16T05:11:25","date_gmt":"2023-07-15T23:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13135"},"modified":"2025-04-02T01:55:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T20:25:39","slug":"what-is-namda-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-namda-art\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Namda Art?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Namda craft of Kashmir is being <strong>successfully revived<\/strong> under a Skill India\u2019s Pilot Project as part of the <strong>Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY),<\/strong> with nearly 2,200 candidates from across six districts of the state, receiving training in the dying art form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About Namda Art:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is said to have begun in the 16th century when Mughal Emperor Akbar wanted to get a covering for his horses to protect them from the cold.<\/li>\n<li>It was introduced by a Sufi saint named <strong>Shah-e-Hamdan<\/strong> to Kashmiris.<\/li>\n<li>Namda is a type of <strong>traditional Kashmiri felted carpet<\/strong> that is <strong>created using sheep wool<\/strong> and has colourful hand embroidery.<\/li>\n<li>The distinct feature of this Kashmiri craft is that <strong>wool is felted and not woven.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How it is made?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is usually a <strong>sandwich of many layers<\/strong> of wool flattened over each other.<\/li>\n<li>After a layer is spread, it is sprinkled homogeneously with water and pressed with a <strong>tool known as \u2018pinjra\u2019<\/strong> (woven willow wicker).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unique themes and <strong>floral patterns<\/strong> provide the themes for these masterpieces <strong>and flowers and leaves, buds and fruits<\/strong> are the essence of the designs.<\/li>\n<li>It is practised as a craft in several cultures, especially in the countries throughout <strong>Asia, viz.
