largest members of the <\/span><b>Delphinidae family.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two species of pilot whales: <\/span><b>Short-finned pilot whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and <\/span><b>Long-finned pilot whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (G. melas),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Short-finned pilot whales found in <\/span><b>tropical and warm-temperate waters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while long-finned species inhabit <\/span><b>cold-temperate and sub-polar oceans.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are distributed in the Pacific<\/span><b> Ocean, Atlantic Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seas near Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Pilot Whales<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are characterized by a <\/span><b>round bulging forehead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a short beaklike snout, and slender pointed flippers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both long-finned and short-finned pilot whales are about 4\u20136 metres (13\u201320 feet) long.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Males of both species are larger than females.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These whales live in groups numbering from dozens to hundreds or even thousands of individuals <\/span><b>and feed mainly on squid.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These groups are based <\/span><b>on matrilineal lines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 meaning that calves stay with their
