style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Defence recently signed contracts worth \u20b953,866.50 crore with two state-owned shipyards for eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Navy under Project 28A.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Project 28A<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>Indian Navy\u2019s Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) programme.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the contracts, <\/span><b>Garden Reach Shipbuilders &amp; Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will <\/span><b>construct five corvettes,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while <\/span><b>Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will construct the <\/span><b>remaining three.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the<\/span><b> first project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which the <\/span><b>ships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be<\/span><b> indigenously designed by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> Indian Navy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>competitive process.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>corvette <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Indian Navy is a <\/span><b>small<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>fast, and heavily armed warship <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked <\/span><b>just below a frigate in size.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGCs are designed for <\/span><b>multi-role operations,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including offensive <\/span><b>Ship-to-Ship or Ship-to-Surface Missile Attacks,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anti-Missile Defences, <\/span><b>Anti-Submarine Warfare <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operations, <\/span><b>Escort Dutie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) including Visit Board Search and Seizure, and Local Naval Defence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian Navy currently operates 18 to 24 corvettes in active service.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These warships will be 127 metres long and 17.6 metres wide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will have a deadweight tonnage of <\/span><b>4,950 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tonnes<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the capability of <\/span><b>operating at sea without replenishment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><b>14 days.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NGCs will accommodate 11 officers and 139 sailors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The platforms will have a highly <\/span><b>sophisticated propulsion architecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><b>Combined Diesel and Gas turbine with a Cross-Connect gearbox (CODAG-CC), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">driving two Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their maximum speed will be 26 knots.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The warships will be fitted with advanced weapons and navigation suites.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed systems include <\/span><b>Medium Range Anti-Ship Missiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 324 mm <\/span><b>torpedo tubes.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The armament suite will also include an<\/span><b> OTO Melara 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the latest upgrade, an <\/span><b>AK-630 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCGs) integrated with an Electro-Optic-based Fire Control System (EOFCS).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> sensor suite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will include an <\/span><b>Electro-Optical Infrared Search and Track (EOIRST) system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a Multi-Function Surveillance, Track, and Guidance Radar (MFSTAR).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NGCs will also <\/span><b>carry helicopters.
