


{"id":13213,"date":"2023-07-18T12:36:40","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T07:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13213"},"modified":"2025-04-02T02:33:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T21:03:53","slug":"gambusia-fish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gambusia-fish\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambusia Fish"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The release of these invasive alien fish species has raised concerns about the <strong>potential harm<\/strong> that will be <strong>sustained by native species<\/strong> that abound in the state\u2019s freshwater bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About Gambusia Fish<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also known as <strong>mosquito fish,<\/strong> and is widely used as a biological agent for controlling mosquito larvae.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>native<\/strong> to the waters of the <strong>south-eastern United States.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been a part of <strong>mosquito-control strategies<\/strong> for over a century in various parts of the world, including India.<\/li>\n<li>A single full grown fish eats about 100 to 300 mosquito larvae per day.<\/li>\n<li>Also it has been <strong>part of various malaria control strategies<\/strong> in India since 1928, including the Urban Malaria Scheme.<\/li>\n<li>The International Union for Conservation of Nature declared Gambusia one of the 100 worst <strong>invasive alien species<\/strong> in the world.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Key facts about Malaria<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Malaria is a disease caused by the <strong>Plasmodium parasite.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The parasite can be spread to humans <strong>through the bites of infected mosquitoes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The plasmodium parasite is spread by <strong>female Anopheles mosquitoes,<\/strong> which are known as &#8220;night-biting&#8221; mosquitoes because they most commonly bite between dusk and dawn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There are many different types of plasmodium parasite, but only 5 types cause malaria in humans.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plasmodium falciparum:<\/strong> It is mainly found in Africa, it&#8217;s the most common type of malaria parasite and is responsible for most malaria deaths worldwide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plasmodium vivax :<\/strong> It is mainly found in Asia and South America, this parasite causes milder symptoms than Plasmodium falciparum, but it can stay in the liver for up to 3 years, which can result in relapses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plasmodium ovale<\/strong>: Fairly uncommon and usually found in West Africa, it can remain in your liver for several years without producing symptoms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plasmodium malariae:<\/strong> This is quite rare and usually only found in Africa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plasmodium knowlesi:<\/strong> This is very rare and found in parts of Southeast Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Plasmodium?<\/h3>\n<p>Plasmodium is a genus of parasitic protozoa that causes malaria in humans and other animals.
