{"id":13258,"date":"2025-03-26T09:58:22","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T04:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=13258"},"modified":"2025-04-02T02:55:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T21:25:34","slug":"commission-on-genetic-resources-for-food-and-agriculture-cgrfa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/commission-on-genetic-resources-for-food-and-agriculture-cgrfa\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Parties to the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture recently gathered in Rome for their 20th meeting (CGRFA-20).<\/p>\n<h2>About Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>initially established by the <\/strong>Food and Agriculture Organization <strong>(FAO) in 1983<\/strong> to <strong>address plant genetic resources (PGR).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It became the <strong>primary permanent international forum for governments<\/strong> to discuss, negotiate, and decide on matters specifically relevant to <strong>genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Over time, the <strong>mandate<\/strong> of the Commission <strong>expanded<\/strong>, and now it <strong>deals with all sectors of GRFA <\/strong>\u2013 plant, animal, forest, aquatic, and microbial and invertebrate genetic resources, covering the vast scope of biodiversity for food and agriculture.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Commission also considers a number of cross-cutting topics, including <strong>food security, nutrition <\/strong>and <strong>human health, m<\/strong>itigation of and <strong>adaptation to climate change<\/strong>, <strong>access to genetic resources and benefit sharing<\/strong> (ABS), and digital sequence information (DSI) on GRFA and <strong>biotechnologies <\/strong>for the characterization, sustainable use, and conservation of GRFA.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It has <strong>179 countries<\/strong> as its members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India is also a member <\/strong>of this commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The work of the Commission on Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) initiated in 1997 resulted in the preparation of the <strong>first-ever Report on the State of the World\u2019s AnGR in 2007<\/strong> and led to the negotiation and <strong>adoption of the Global Plan of Action for AnGR (GPA), <\/strong>also in 2007.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the Commission\u2019s <strong>landmark achievements<\/strong> include: the I<strong>nternational Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>adopted by<\/strong> the Thirty-First Session of the Conference of the <strong>FAO of the United Nations<\/strong> on 3 November 2001.
